The 2025 Women’s Ashes is drawing to a close, with the highly anticipated one-off pink-ball Test scheduled from January 30 to February 2 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) now only moments away. The multi-format Ashes series has already been decided, with hosts Australia asserting their dominance by sweeping both the 3-match One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) series.

The match will mark the first-ever day-night Test at the MCG and the first women’s Test at the venue since the 1948-49 season, also celebrating the 90th anniversary of women’s Test cricket. England’s struggles across all three departments—batting, bowling, and fielding—throughout the multi-format series have prevented the Test from serving as a series decider.

Head-to-head, Australia and England have faced off in 52 Tests so far, with the rivalry marked by intense competition. While three of the most recent five Tests ended in a draw, Australia triumphed in both away Tests during the 2015 and 2023 series and also holds the upper hand with 13 wins to England’s 9.

The 2023 Ashes proved to be an unforgettable spectacle, setting high expectations for the 2025 Ashes, although it didn’t quite live up to expectations. Their last Test outing during the ’23 Ashes at Trent Bridge was an absolute rollercoaster, with both teams posting impressive first innings totals of over 450 runs, leaving Australia with a narrow 10-run lead.

In the second innings, Australia managed 257 runs, setting England a challenging target of 268 to win. Despite a promising start, England faltered under pressure, with Ashleigh Gardner playing a pivotal role in a dramatic collapse. Gardner’s incredible performance—securing a record-breaking 12-wicket haul, including 8 wickets in the second innings—ultimately saw England dismissed for just 178 on the morning of Day 5, handing Australia the win.

In Tests, Australia holds a record of 22 wins and 46 draws from 79 matches, while England has played 101 Tests, winning 21 and drawing 64. Notably, England entered this series on a high, coming off a commanding 286-run Test win over South Africa, while also winning both the T20I and ODI series against the same opponent.

On the other hand, Australia also entered the series in impressive form, sweeping the home ODI series against England and against New Zealand in an away ODI series. Their last Test outing, also against South Africa, dates to February 2024, when they registered a big win by an innings and 284 runs.

As England takes the field to avoid their worst-ever result—a whitewash—they face a setback with Kate Cross unable to recover in time from her back issues for the Test. Meanwhile, Australia, who had been anxiously monitoring the fitness of captain Alyssa Healy and premier all-rounder Ash Gardner, received positive news with both being declared fit for the match.
