Bio:
Ellyse Perry’s story is one of remarkable versatility and achievement, having represented Australia in both cricket and football at the international level. She holds the unique distinction of being the first Australian to compete in both ICC and FIFA World Cups. This feat is not surprising, given that during her school years, Perry excelled in a variety of sports, including tennis, athletics, touch football, and golf, alongside cricket and soccer.
Perry made her international cricket debut in July 2007, becoming the youngest Australian to play international cricket at the age of 16. As her career progressed, she had to choose between cricket and football. In a 2018 interview with The Roar, Perry explained that her path to becoming a single-sport athlete occurred naturally as both sports demanded full-time professional commitment. Ultimately, she chose to focus on cricket.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest women cricketers of all time, Perry has an impressive record. In domestic cricket, playing in the Women’s National Cricket League, she has scored eight centuries and taken two five-wicket hauls as of 2024. She also made history in early 2024 in India by becoming the first woman to play 300 internationals for Australia.
Across the three formats on the international stage, Perry has scored four centuries and taken five five-wicket hauls as of 2024. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), she debuted on July 22, 2007, against New Zealand and picked up two wickets in her first match. As of 2024, she has accumulated over 3,900 runs and taken more than 160 wickets in ODIs.
In T20 Internationals (T20Is), Perry made her debut on February 1, 2008, against England. She delivered an all-around performance, scoring 29*(25) and taking four wickets, earning her the Player of the Match award. As of 2024, she has scored over 1,800 runs and taken more than 120 wickets in T20Is.
Perry’s Test debut came on February 15, 2008, against England. As of 2024, she has scored over 900 runs and taken more than 30 wickets in Tests. Her first Test century was an unbeaten 213 against England, in November 2017, at North Sydney, a match where she also took three wickets and was named Player of the Match.
In franchise cricket, Perry has significantly contributed to various successful teams, winning two Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) titles with the Sydney Sixers as captain and one Women’s Premier League (WPL) title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. In the WBBL, she has scored two centuries and taken one five-wicket haul as of 2024. She was the leading run-scorer in WBBL|03 (552 runs) and WBBL|04 (778 runs) and was named Player of the Tournament in WBBL|04. As a fielder, she took the most catches (15) in WBBL|08.
Perry was signed by Birmingham Phoenix for the inaugural season of The Hundred on March 18, 2021, and was named the captain for the 2024 season. In the WPL, as of 2024, Perry achieved the best bowling figures of 6/15 against Mumbai Indians on March 12, 2024, in Delhi, and won the Orange Cap for the 2024 season with 347 runs.
Perry’s individual accolades include the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Award (2017, 2019, 2020) and the Belinda Clark Award (2016, 2018, 2020), each three times. She was named the 2019 ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year, ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Decade for 2011–2020, and ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Decade for 2011–2020. Additionally, she was twice named Wisden Leading Woman Cricketer in the World (2016, 2019) and was one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2020.
