Brief History of Mozambique Women’s National Cricket Team
The Mozambique women’s national cricket team represents Mozambique in international women’s cricket, and is managed by the Mozambican Cricket Federation. The team has been competing in various regional and international tournaments since gaining full Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) status in 2018.
Historical Highlights – Mozambique Women’s National Cricket Team
In April 2018, the International Cricket Council (ICC) granted full WT20I status to all its members. Consequently, all Twenty20 matches played between Mozambique and other ICC members since 1 July 2018 are recognized as WT20Is. They debuted against Sierra Leone at Botswana Cricket Association Oval 1, Gaborone, on 20 August 2018.
Tournament highlights – Mozambique Women’s National Cricket Team
1. Botswana 7s Tournament (August 2018):
Mozambique’s first WT20I matches were contested in this tournament against Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Sierra Leone, and Zambia. Mozambique finished fourth on the table with two wins and three losses and lost the third-place playoff against Botswana by nine wickets.
2. T20 Kwacha Cup (November 2019):
A 7-match bilateral T20I series against Malawi, where all matches were played at Saint Andrews International High School in Blantyre, Malawi, resulted in Mozambique losing the series 3-4.
3. 2021 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier:
Placed in Group A alongside Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Rwanda, Botswana, and Eswatini; Mozambique managed to secure only one victory against Eswatini and did not qualify further.
4. 2023 ACA Africa T20 Cup:
Placed in Group A alongside Uganda, Malawi, and Rwanda; Mozambique registered one victory against Rwanda, finishing third in the group and failing to advance to the playoffs.
5. 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier (Division Two):
Placed in Group B alongside Sierra Leone, Cameroon, and Eswatini; Mozambique managed to secure one victory against Eswatini, finishing third in the group and failing to advance to the playoffs.
