Bio:

Asha Sobhana Joy is an individual with immense faith in the universe. Her inspiration to bowl leg spin came from watching Anil Kumble take 10 wickets against Pakistan in 1999. As a young girl, Asha would make balls to play with out of newspapers, old milk packets, and rubber bands. She even snuck away to try out for the Trivandrum district team at 12 without telling her parents, leaving them worried when they couldn’t trace her after school. Watching Sachin Tendulkar’s ‘Desert Storm’ live turned her simple love for the game into an obsession to follow in her idol’s footsteps.

She was picked up by the Bangalore franchise in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League. In the first edition, she picked five wickets in the same number of matches. It was the second edition of the WPL which brought the leg spinner into the spotlight. She played a crucial role in the team’s bowling attack, finishing the season with impressive stats. Sobhana took a total of 12 wickets across the tournament, making her one of the leading wicket-takers for her team. Her standout moment came when she delivered a match-winning five-wicket haul against the UP Warriorz, earning her the Player of the Match award for that game. She also picked up two wickets in the final, helping RCB win their maiden WPL triumph.

After an impressive 2024 WPL season, she received her maiden national call-up for an away series against Bangladesh. She played the last two matches of the five-match series, picking two wickets in each match. The leg spinner is bowling her way to glory, having made her debut at the age of 33, proving that age is just a number for the Keralite player.
