Australian all-rounder Georgia Wareham put on a masterclass performance to help her side secure a dominant 65-run victory over South Africa at Old Trafford.

Wareham proved why she is considered a true triple-threat in T20 cricket. She smashed a quickfire 32 runs off 22 balls, took three crucial wickets for just 13 runs, grabbed a sharp catch, and pulled off a brilliant run-out. Reflecting on her player of the match performance, Wareham shared her pride in making an impact.
“It’s probably one of the better games I’ve played in a long time for Australia,” Wareham said after the match, as quoted by cricket.com.au. “Anytime I get to play for Australia and put this shirt on, I just want to be able to impact the game at any point, in any facet, so to be able to do that today in all three, yeah, I’ll take it. Hopefully there’s some more of this to come, and I haven’t peaked too early.”
Wareham’s batting value has grown massively. While she previously experimented higher up the order, her recent success comes from adapting to the middle order. She credits her time in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) for helping her feel comfortable walking out at number five or six. “I’m happy to bat anywhere in this team. Having a lot of experience in the Big Bash batting at No.5, just getting used to that middle order, has certainly helped me in the position that I am now batting for Australia,” she explained.
Australia made a rare move by selecting four frontline spinners in their starting eleven. The tactic worked perfectly as the spin attack combined to dismantle the South African lineup for just 107 runs. Wareham emphasized that strong team communication is the secret behind their success on the field. “It’s awesome to bowl together. We all communicate when we’re out there what the wicket’s doing and we’re all in on each other’s plans, so I think it certainly helps when we get out there,” Wareham said.
The Australian team was unsure of how the surface would behave, but their belief in their primary weapon never wavered. “Seeing the game before us not seeing as much spin, I think we were a little bit unsure until we’d started bowling on it ourselves. But spin is a pretty big part of our bowling attack anyway, we pride ourselves on being able to make that impact on any wicket, even if it’s not providing us with much,” she added.
Wareham gives the Australian squad incredible flexibility. As a leg-spinner, she can slow down the scoring rate or pick up breakthrough wickets. As a lower order batter, she can clear the boundary with ease. Her sharp fielding makes her a constant threat to opposition batters looking for quick singles.
Her big-tournament temperament is well established. In Australia’s T20 World Cup triumph in South Africa, she made a sensational comeback from a serious ACL knee injury. With very little game time behind her, she stepped up under immense pressure, picking up crucial wickets and contributing vital runs down the order to help Australia lift their sixth title.
With the current tournament underway, Wareham’s red-hot form across all three departments signals great things ahead for the defending champions.
