The opening match of a home World Cup brings immense pressure, but England opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge found the perfect way to handle it. Playing in front of a passionate home crowd at Edgbaston, the explosive right-hander smashed a magnificent, unbeaten 105 to guide England to a thumping 87-run victory over Sri Lanka.

While the historic knock set the tone for England’s tournament campaign, the real magic lay in the inspiration behind it. Just last month, Danni and her wife Georgie welcomed their first child, a beautiful baby girl named Daisy. For Danni, every run scored under the Birmingham sun was a tribute to her newborn daughter.
Danni looked in sublime touch from the very beginning, dismantling the Sri Lankan bowling attack with 13 boundaries and one towering six. As she neared the ultimate milestone in the final over, the excitement in the stadium reached a fever pitch. Needing a boundary to cross into triple figures, she showed immense calmness to finish the job in style.
Reflecting on those high-pressure final moments of her innings, Danni shared her tactical thoughts and emotional motivation, “I think I was on about 90 and I was like, I could actually get 100 now and do it for Daisy. The girl (Malki Madara) that was bowling was going quite slow and wide and square (leg) was up, so I was like, right, let’s just jump across and try and hoick at it and try and get it through the gap. And once I saw it pierce the gap and go for four, as you can see…I was really happy.”
Upon hitting the winning four, Danni displayed a cradle celebration, a beautiful gesture that brought cheers and emotional smiles to everyone watching. Breaking a personal milestone drought on the world stage made the day even more memorable. It was a milestone she had been chasing with determination and achieving it on home soil made it unforgettable.
“I’ve been after that third T20I hundred for a few years now, so I was chuffed a bit to get it out there at Edgbaston in front of my family as well. It was really, really special.” The day was a complete family affair, with her close ones cheering loudly from the stands. Danni’s family has always been her biggest support system throughout her long cricket career and having them present to witness this new chapter of her life as a cricketer and a mother meant everything to her.
Stepping back onto the field after such a massive personal milestone has completely shifted how Danni views the game. Cricket remains her passion, but her thoughts are now firmly anchored to her family waiting for her at home.
“I’ve not seen Daisy since I joined up, but I’ll see her tomorrow in Southampton, so I’m really looking forward to that. It feels like I’ve not seen her for months and it just puts a whole new perspective on things. It’s all I think about, even in the night as well. It’s just incredible and I can’t wait for her to come and cheer us on for the rest of the tournament.”
With her opening score of 105 not out safely in the record books, Danni is flying high. As England moves to Southampton for their next clash, the team is filled with joy, and baby Daisy will finally be there in the stands to watch her mother lead from the front.
