Pakistan Women received an early scare ahead of their much-anticipated ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 opener against India after captain Fatima Sana suffered a painful blow to her right knee during a training session in Birmingham on Saturday.

The incident occurred during Pakistan’s final practice ahead of the high-voltage Group 1 encounter at Edgbaston. While bowling in the nets, Sana was struck on her follow-through by a powerful straight drive from experienced batter Ayesha Zafar. The Pakistan skipper immediately went down in discomfort, clutching her knee and visibly wincing in pain as teammates and medical staff rushed to her aid.
The sight of their captain lying on the ground briefly raised concerns within the Pakistan camp, especially given Sana’s importance to the side as both a leader and an all-round performer. Following the incident, she spent much of the remainder of the training session on the sidelines with ice applied to her knee and did not take any further active part in practice.
Fortunately for Pakistan, the injury appears less serious than initially feared. Around 45 minutes after the incident, Sana was seen walking comfortably and later made her way to the main ground without any visible signs of distress. Speaking during the pre-match press conference, the 24-year-old sought to reassure fans and the team management.
“Ayesha baaji played the shot, and it hit my knee. I think it is good now,” Sana said. When asked directly about her availability for Sunday’s blockbuster clash against India, she responded positively, saying, “Yes, hopefully.”
Fatima Sana’s fitness remains a crucial factor for Pakistan’s campaign in the expanded 12-team ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Since the previous edition of the tournament, she has evolved into one of the most impactful all-rounders in women’s cricket. Apart from leading Pakistan’s pace attack, Sana has been a game-changer with the bat, scoring at a remarkable strike rate of 183.06 in T20 Internationals during this period.
Among her standout performances are a record-equaling 15-ball half-century, one of the fastest ever in Women’s T20Is, and a blistering 90 off 41 balls against South Africa in Potchefstroom. Earlier this year, she also starred in Pakistan’s memorable victory over South Africa in Benoni, contributing a rapid 47 from 30 deliveries and claiming figures of 2 for 12.
As Pakistan prepares to face arch-rivals India in one of the marquee fixtures of the Women’s T20 World Cup, all eyes will be on the fitness of their captain. Having featured in every edition of the tournament but still searching for their maiden title, Pakistan can ill afford to lose one of their most influential players at such a critical stage of the competition.
For now, the signs are encouraging, and Pakistan will be hoping Fatima Sana is fully fit and ready to lead from the front when they take the field at Edgbaston.
