Flora Devonshire, Nensi Patel and Izzy Sharp Earn New Zealand Contracts for 2026-27

New Zealand Cricket has rewarded three of the country’s most promising young talents with central contracts for the 2026-27 season, with Flora Devonshire, Nensi Patel and Izzy Sharp earning places on the White Ferns’ 17-player contracted list. The announcement comes as New Zealand prepare for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England and Wales, where they will begin their title defence with a renewed blend of youth and experience.

Devonshire and Sharp have received their first central contracts after progressing through New Zealand Cricket’s Central Players of Interest programme, which is designed to fast-track the development of emerging players. Patel, meanwhile, returns to the contracted group after previously holding a central deal during the 2022-23 season.

The trio replace several experienced names who have recently decided to step away from international cricket. Suzie Bates, Lauren Down and Lea Tahuhu have all announced retirement from the international game after the T20 World Cup, while former captain Sophie Devine remains on a casual playing agreement after stepping back from full-time commitments.

White Ferns head coach Ben Sawyer said the three newcomers had earned their opportunities through strong performances and consistent development. “Congratulations to all 17 contracted players, especially to Flora, Nensi and Izzy who are new to the list. All three of these players add talent and energy to the group and we’re really excited about their future as White Ferns.”

Devonshire, a left-handed batting all-rounder from Central Districts, made her international debut in March 2025 and has already been included in two World Cup squads. The 23-year-old has impressed despite battling finger injuries and is regarded as one of the country’s most exciting young all-round prospects. Sawyer believes her versatility makes her a valuable addition to the national setup. “Flora’s a clean striker with lots of power. Being left-handed she offers a point of difference as she’s able to hit to different areas of the field, and there’s the added bonus of her left-arm orthodox bowling.”

Patel’s rise has been equally impressive. The 24-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder has enjoyed an outstanding start to her international career after making her debut earlier this year. She has already claimed 14 wickets in T20 internationals, averaging just 9.8 with an economy rate of 4.04. Patel recently strengthened her credentials by taking 4-18 against Bangladesh in a T20 World Cup warm-up match. Sawyer highlighted her consistency as one of her biggest strengths. “Nensi’s consistently accurate with the ball, and she has great control over her length and pace.”

Sharp, meanwhile, has long been regarded as one of New Zealand’s brightest batting prospects. The 21-year-old captained New Zealand at the inaugural ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in 2023 and enjoyed an excellent domestic season with Canterbury. She finished as the Magicians’ leading run-scorer in the 2025-26 Super Smash, averaging 30 while striking at 128.

Sawyer even compared some aspects of her game to that of Devine by saying, “Izzy’s batting has been building from strength to strength. She possesses similar qualities to Sophie and with Soph stepping away from international cricket soon, it’s really exciting to bring someone with Izzy’s power onto a central contract so we can keep working with her to develop those skills.”

While the focus was on the new additions, left-arm spinner Fran Jonas also retained her central contract as she continues her push to establish herself in the White Ferns setup. The 22-year-old recently represented New Zealand A on their tour of Sri Lanka and has been working on technical adjustments to her bowling.

Sawyer also noted that competition for central contracts continues to intensify as New Zealand’s talent pool grows, a sign of increasing depth within the women’s game. New Zealand will hope the next generation can build on recent success and help keep the White Ferns among the world’s leading teams in the years ahead.
