NZ20 League Launch Pushed Back to 2027-28 Season by New Zealand Cricket

New Zealand Cricket’s (NZCs) proposed NZ20 competition, which is expected to include both men’s and women’s franchise tournaments, has been delayed until the 2027-28 home summer, with officials confirming more time is needed to properly establish the new league structure.

Originally targeted for a January 2027 launch, the competition is now likely to begin in December 2027 after NZC concluded that scheduling pressures and ongoing structural work made the earlier timeline unrealistic. The development carries particular significance for women’s cricket in New Zealand, where the league is expected to become a major platform for expanding professional opportunities and strengthening the domestic game.

NZC announced on May 11 that discussions with stakeholders and investors had progressed positively, but organisers believed delaying the launch would provide a stronger long-term foundation for the competition. “Our focus is on ensuring the future of domestic T20 cricket in New Zealand is sustainable, competitive and aligned with the global game,” NZC chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon said.

The NZ20 project has been positioned as a major evolution of New Zealand’s domestic structure and is expected to eventually replace Super Smash as the country’s leading T20 competition. Importantly for women’s cricket, NZC has consistently emphasised that the women’s tournament will be a central part of the league rather than a secondary addition.

The delay means the current Super Smash structure, including the women’s competition, will continue through the 2026-27 season. Super Smash has played a vital role in developing White Ferns players and emerging domestic talent over the past decade. NZC cited international scheduling as one of the primary reasons behind the postponement, with New Zealand set to host major men’s Test series against Australia and Sri Lanka during January and February 2027. Officials believed the available window was too limited to launch a new franchise tournament at the same time.

“We’ve been working closely with NZ20 and are encouraged by the progress made to date. Taking additional time now will help ensure the competition is set up to succeed over the long term,” Puketapu-Lyndon said.

The additional preparation period is expected to help organisers finalise franchise locations, ownership structures and commercial partnerships before the competition officially begins. Investor interest has reportedly grown significantly since NZ20 was identified as NZC’s preferred model for the future of domestic T20 cricket.

For women’s cricket, the delay could ultimately provide more time to establish stronger regional identities and commercial backing around the women’s franchises before the inaugural season begins. NZ20 establishment committee chair Don Mackinnon stressed that organisers wanted the competition to launch fully prepared rather than risk introducing an underdeveloped product. “We are determined to ensure NZ20 launches without compromise and is set up for long-term success from day one,” Mackinnon said.

Women’s franchise cricket has grown rapidly worldwide in recent years through tournaments such as India’s Women’s Premier League (WPL), Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and The Hundred. NZC views NZ20 as a critical step in ensuring New Zealand remains competitive in that evolving landscape while also creating greater opportunities for domestic women players.

The league is expected to provide higher visibility, improved professional structures and stronger financial pathways for women’s cricketers within New Zealand’s domestic system. Mackinnon also acknowledged that fitting the new competition alongside international cricket was crucial to the league’s future success. “It is also critical that the competition sits alongside, not against, international cricket. With the international schedule now confirmed, the available window for 2027 is simply too tight,” he said.

While the launch has been delayed, NZC remains committed to the long-term vision for NZ20, with women’s cricket expected to play a major role in shaping the competition’s identity when it finally begins in the 2027-28 season.
