Zimbabwe Opener Kelis Ndhlovu Ruled Out of 3rd ODI After Frightening On-Field Collapse

Zimbabwe’s cricket tour of New Zealand has taken a sobering turn as opening batter Kelis Ndhlovu has been officially ruled out of the March 11 third and final ODI. The decision comes after a frightening incident during the second match in Dunedin, where a short-pitched delivery left the young opener sidelined and under close medical watch.

The incident occurred early in the second game during the seventh over. Ndhlovu, who had looked steady in a 25-run opening stand with Modester Mupachikwa, attempted to duck under a sharp bouncer from New Zealand’s Bree Illing. Despite being equipped with a helmet, the impact was severe enough to cause her to collapse on the pitch immediately. The match was halted as medical staff rushed to the middle, eventually resulting in Ndhlovu being transported to a local hospital by ambulance.

Zimbabwe Cricket later provided a reassuring update, confirming that while the opener briefly lost consciousness and was diagnosed with a concussion, the situation is stable. “An MRI scan later confirmed there was no skull fracture,” a spokesperson for Zimbabwe Cricket noted. Following her discharge from the hospital, a follow-up exam on March 10 morning gave her the all-clear regarding any further complications, though she remains in recovery mode.

In the immediate aftermath of her injury, Zimbabwe utilized the concussion substitute rule, bringing in Tendai Makusha to fill the void. However, the loss of their settled opener was felt on the scoreboard. New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr dominated the remainder of the contest, tearing through the lineup with a clinical seven-wicket haul. Her performance guided the White Ferns to an eight-wicket victory, effectively sealing the series with a 2-0 lead.

While the Zimbabwe camp will be disappointed to lose the series, the primary focus remains on Ndhlovu’s long-term health. Missing the final dead-rubber match is a precautionary but necessary step to ensure she completes the standard concussion protocols. The team will now look to salvage some pride in the final outing on March 11 without one of their key top-order anchors.
