The incident occurred during Zimbabwe’s innings when Ndhlovu was facing fast bowler Bree Illing. Ndhlovu had started the innings steadily and had built 25 runs opening stand with Modester Mupachikwa when the unfortunate moment unfolded. Illing delivered a sharp short ball that Ndhlovu attempted to evade but the ball struck her on the helmet.

The impact was immediate and worrying. Ndhlovu collapsed to the ground right after being hit, prompting instant concern from players on both sides. Medical staff quickly rushed onto the field to attend to her while teammates and opponents watched anxiously. After receiving initial treatment on the ground, Ndhlovu was carefully placed on a stretcher and taken away in an ambulance to the hospital for further examination.

Zimbabwe were forced to bring in a concussion substitute, with Tendai Makusha replacing Ndhlovu in the playing XI. The incident understandably shook the Zimbabwe players, many of whom had witnessed the blow from close range.

Speaking after the match, Zimbabwe’s interim head coach Kate Ebrahim provided a reassuring update on Ndhlovu’s condition. “We’ve received some good news. She’s responding now, which is really lovely to hear,” Ebrahim said during the post-match press conference. “She’s just recovering and we’ll see what the scans say and move on from there.”

Ebrahim also revealed that she had briefly spoken with Mupachikwa after Ndhlovu was taken off the field. As the non-striker during the incident and Ndhlovu’s opening partner, Mupachikwa had a clear view of what happened.

“I just made sure that the other opener was in a position to mentally carry on. She was right there with her,” Ebrahim explained. Moments like that can be quite shocking for everyone, so the coach made sure to keep the environment under control. She checked in with the other players, made sure how they felt and encouraged them to regroup as a team and continue.

Despite the emotional interruption, the match eventually resumed. New Zealand went on to dominate the contest, thanks largely to a remarkable bowling performance from star all-rounder Amelia Kerr. Kerr delivered a sensational spell, picking up seven wickets to dismantle Zimbabwe’s batting lineup.

Her outstanding effort helped New Zealand secure a comfortable eight-wicket victory, giving the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ODI series with one match still to be played.

While the result went in New Zealand’s favor, the primary concern remained Ndhlovu’s health. Both teams and supporters will be hoping for positive scan results and a swift recovery for the young Zimbabwe opener after what was an alarming moment on the field.
