CPL in Early Talks to Expand Women’s T20 League with USA Team by 2026

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is gearing up to make a significant impact on women’s cricket by planning to introduce a new team from the United States in its Women’s T20 tournament within the next two years. This exciting development, led by CPL chief executive Pete Russell, aims to broaden the international reach of the women’s franchise league.

Russell is focused on expanding the current three-team structure of the women’s CPL to four, which would enhance diversity and competition. As reported by BBC Sport, the CPL aims to roll out this new team by the 2026 edition set to take place in Barbados. With growing fan engagement and platforms like winna.com allowing fans to place their bets and be part of the excitement, organisers are looking to work with key stakeholders over the next 11 months to iron out the details and logistics for this ambitious project.

However, any changes may be affected by ongoing governance challenges involving USA Cricket. Despite this, CPL officials are optimistic about launching the new team by the following year if things go smoothly. Discussions are still in the early phases, but the plan is for the American team to follow the existing CPL format, featuring four overseas players alongside USA cricketers.

This initiative represents a fantastic opportunity for women’s cricket in the USA, providing players with much-needed international exposure as the sport heads towards its historic return to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. Many see this move as part of a larger vision to bolster the cricket landscape within the country and enhance its talent pool on a global scale.

While the USA men’s team is set to automatically qualify for the Olympics as the host nation, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has yet to confirm the inclusion of the USA women’s team. Concerns about the competitiveness of the women’s team are key in that decision-making process. Currently ranked 25th in the world, the USA Women’s T20 team has not qualified for a major ICC event, which highlights the importance of initiatives like the CPL expansion to speed up their growth.

From its inception in 2022 to 2025, the Women’s CPL has been a three-team event; Trinbago Knight Riders, Barbados Royals, and Guyana Amazon Warriors – Barbados Royals are the league’s most successful team, winning three out of four tournaments, with Knight Riders the only other champion side (2021), reinforcing their dominance in a fiercely competitive environment.

Introducing a USA-based team into the CPL would not only boost the league’s profile in North America but also foster talent exchange and international collaboration. For players, it would provide a unique chance to compete alongside global stars, learn from experienced professionals, and elevate their game.

As cricket continues to gain traction in the American sports scene, this move by the Caribbean Premier League could usher in a new era for women’s T20 cricket, inspiring more young girls to take up the sport and supporting the global push for greater gender equality in cricket.
