As the 5th edition of the Women’s Hundred bursts into life, all eyes will be trained not just on the team battles and tactical innovations, but on one of English cricket’s greatest modern stars, Nat Sciver-Brunt. Nat Sciver-Brunt has etched her name atop the competition’s run-scorers list, becoming the proud first member of the 1,000 runs club in the Women’s Hundred. She got there in style, stepping down the track, holding her shape and bangs it with brute force over long off for a boundary on the 65th ball, the final one of Hannah Baker’s 3rd set in the game.

She was brilliant and in full flow with the bat, smashing the Phoenix bowlers all over the park, en route to her promising half-century (64 off 40 balls) for her side. However, it wasn’t enough to get her side over the line, falling 11 runs short against the Ellyse Perry-led Birmingham. Her knock included 8 boundaries and a maximum.

The Trent Rockets stalwart, who has lit up this competition since its inception, is more than just a statistical machine; she is the heartbeat of her side and a defining figure in the tournament’s short but glittering history.

Nat Sciver-Brunt’s story with the Trent Rockets began on July 24, 2021, at their home turf in Nottingham, where she announced her arrival in style. Facing Southern Brave on debut, Sciver-Brunt smashed 44 off 29 balls at a strike rate of 151.72, instantly showcasing her flair for rising to the occasion. Since then, she has donned the Rockets jersey for 29 innings, amassing 1,031 runs at a staggering average of 49.09 and an impressive strike rate of 138.76, including eight memorable half-centuries.

Her best, and arguably the most scintillating, knock came at the home of cricket, Lord’s, against the London Spirit on August 12, 2023. Chasing a competitive total, Sciver-Brunt turned on the style to craft an unbeaten 81 off just 41 balls, peppering the hallowed turf with nine boundaries and clearing it four times. Her effort, at a blistering strike rate of 197.56, won her the Player of the Match award and showcased her capacity for dominance under pressure, a theme consistent across her storied career.

Ahead of this landmark-laden season, Sciver-Brunt made the considered decision to step down as captain of the Trent Rockets, citing workload management and a desire to prolong her career at the top level. Her leadership, both on and off the field, has played a crucial role in shaping the Rockets’ identity over the past four seasons. In her place, the dynamic Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has assumed the captaincy, ready to steer the team toward new horizons.

Sciver-Brunt’s transition from a leadership role to a seasoned senior pro signals not a step back, but a continuing evolution, one that allows her to focus purely on wielding the bat to ever-greater effect. For fans and young cricketers across the country, she stands as proof that sustained excellence in a shorter format environment is not just possible, but attainable with hunger and dedication.

It is not only runs and records, but it is the indelible inspiration that Nat Sciver-Brunt provides to peers and the next generation. To reach 1,000 runs has confirmed her status as the tournament’s gold standard; few would have bet against her achieving it as soon as she did.
