Why was Alice Capsey Released from England Squad Ahead of ODI Decider?

England’s rising all-rounder Alice Capsey has been granted a strategic release from the national squad ahead of the final ODI in their series against India, allowing her to return to Surrey Women for a key domestic match in the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup.

With the series levelled at 1-1 between England Women and India Women, the decision sees Capsey step away from the national squad for the series decider on July 22, enabling her to feature for Surrey Women, who are gearing up to take on Hampshire Women in Match 35 of the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup on Thursday, July 24 at Guildford Bason. Despite being part of England’s white-ball setup, Capsey didn’t get playing time in the first two ODIs. The ECB management opted to channel her energy into domestic cricket rather than bench time, prioritising her development and match readiness.

Although Alice Capsey has been a regular part of England’s white-ball squad, limited game time during the current series likely influenced the decision to release her for domestic duty. The 20-year-old has featured in 20 ODI innings, scoring 343 runs with a highest score of 44, and has also claimed 12 wickets. She will now look to make a mark in domestic colours.

Surrey relies on Capsey’s all-round prowess. Her presence strengthens the squad and amplifies her role in key fixtures. This decision reflects a broader strategy: giving young talent regular game time supports long-term growth and performance stability.

Capsey debuted in domestic cricket at just 14 and rose through Surrey’s ranks, earning Young Player of the Year honours with South East Stars and a Hundred crown with Oval Invincibles.

Currently, Surrey Women are table-toppers of the Vitality Blast Women 2025, with 52 points, registering victories in 11 out of 14 matches. If Capsey excels for Surrey, she could return to the national squad with restored momentum, potentially playing in future ODI and T20 fixtures, including upcoming series and the Women’s Ashes later this year. Her development is central to England’s strategy of nurturing dynamic, multi-format players.
