In a moment of pride for Nepal and associated cricket, Gaushala Municipality has officially appointed Puja Mahato, the captain of Nepal’s U-19 women’s cricket team, as its honorary sports officer.

Recognizing her remarkable achievements on the cricket field and her role as an inspiration for young athletes across the nation, the organization has conferred this honour to celebrate her contribution of rising stars and inculcate the belief of sporting acumen in the region.
Puja Mahato-led Nepal scripted a sensational campaign to seal their place in the World Cup on the final day of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier 2024.
Going into the all-important clash, Nepal were not only in need of 2 points but also had to outclass the opponent with a decisive margin to leap the table on grounds of net-run-rate. The equation was challenging — it wasn’t just about winning but doing it in a convincing fashion.
Rising to the occasion in a pressurized ambience, Nepal chased down the target in style, pulling off a memorable victory that secured their qualification and etched a proud chapter in the country’s cricketing history. As part of Group D, they faced Australia, Bangladesh and Scotland but eventually returned empty-handed and finished at the bottom of the table.
The 19-year-old middle order batter Puja Mahato is already making a name for herself as a cricketer for Nepal at Women’s T20 Internationals.
A consistent all-round player, she has recorded 409 runs in 26 innings with the personal best of 62 not. Proving her mettle as a match-winning bowler, Puja has taken 26 wickets in 31 innings. Her best figures of 3 for 2 display her ability to thrive in pressure situations, while she averages an impressive 14.76 with an economy rate of 4.75 in the shortest format of the game.
Puja remains a valuable asset for Nepal women’s cricket at both ends of the innings.
