Her longstanding devotion to Yorkshire is demonstrated by her appointment as captain. She has reiterated her dedication to the team in spite of the difficulties caused by Yorkshire’s exclusion from the ECB’s first list of Tier 1 counties for the 2025 season.

The ECB has guaranteed Yorkshire automatic promotion to Tier 1 in 2026, meaning the team will play in Tier 2 in 2025. Winfield-Hill’s decision to stay was significantly influenced by this option. Yorkshire is about to embark on an exciting adventure as the 2025 season signals the end of the regional structure and the start of a county-based approach.

Winfield-Hill put in a Player of the Series performance for Northern Diamonds in 2022, finishing with 470 runs from 7 games at an average of 78.33 to see the Diamonds win the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, One Day competition. The following year, while the Diamonds failed to successfully defend their title, Winfield-Hill enjoyed another stellar season with the bat, finishing with 663 runs from 14 games at an average of 51, finishing once again as the top scorer.

The Diamonds exited in the semi-finals in the 2024 edition, with the veteran English batter finishing the season with 361 runs from 14 games at an average of 27.76. However, In the domestic T20 competition, the Charlotte Edwards Cup, Winfield-Hill’s returns remained ordinary, with her best season coming during the 2023 edition, where she finished with 171 runs from 7 games at an average of 24.42. Nonetheless, her reliability sets her amongst the best in English cricket.

Having represented England for almost a decade, Winfield-Hill has fallen out of national setup, having last worn the England jersey back in 2022. Since then, apart from playing in various domestic competitions in England, Winfield-Hill also plays in the Women’s National Cricket League, the domestic 50-over competition in Australia, where she has represented Queensland and also has represented multiple teams in the Women’s Big Bash League (BBL).

“I am incredibly delighted to have been made Club Captain. I really am Yorkshire through and through, so it’s a real honor for me to lead this team in the first stage of our new era,” said Winfield-Hill.

“Being captain of this great club is not just about leading on the field but also leading off it too. I hope that under my captaincy, our team can inspire the next generation of young women cricketers in Yorkshire.”

With 55 ODIs, 44 T20Is, and five Test matches under her belt, Lauren Winfield-Hill brings a wealth of experience to her new position. Her aggressive batting, tactical knowledge, and leadership abilities make her the perfect candidate to lead Yorkshire Women through this transitional phase.

Her career highlights include a century against Pakistan in ODIs and a game-winning 74 in a T20I match against South Africa. In domestic cricket, she has been a dominant force, leading Yorkshire to their first County Championship title in 2015 and dominating in the Women’s Super League.

Rising sensation Maddie Ward and Scotland international Rachel Slater, who are both vice captains, will assist Winfield-Hill. They are an example to Yorkshire’s dedication to developing the team’s future leaders.

“For Rachel and Maddie to stand alongside Lauren will be invaluable. Both have shown fantastic leadership qualities, and this will give them opportunities to become excellent leaders moving forward,” said Yorkshire Women’s Head Coach, Rich Pyrah.

Winfield-Hill will lead the team as they begin their campaign on April 19 and the team is full of hope and tenacity despite the difficulties of playing in Tier 2 for a season. The group should successfully establish a solid basis for a 2026 return to Tier 1 under Winfield-Hill’s guidance.
