Trinbago Knight Riders Women opened their Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) 2026 campaign this season with a 21-run win over Barbados Tridents Women at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown on September 5. After being asked to bat first, the Knight Riders made 155 in 20 overs. Barbados started the chase with intent but were bowled out for 134 in 18.4 overs. Shikha Pandey played a key role with both bat and ball and was named Player of the Match.
Trinbago got off to a fast start through Yastika Bhatia and Laura Harris. The opening pair added 67 before Harris was dismissed for 38 from only 19 balls. She hit four fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 200. Bhatia continued to keep the scoring moving and made 35 from 28 balls, including six fours. Their partnership gave Trinbago a strong platform before Barbados began taking regular wickets.
After Harris fell, Trinbago lost Deandra Dottin for 14 and Bhatia for 35 in quick succession, leaving the innings needing a steady middle-order effort. Marizanne Kapp made 8, while Madeline Penna added an important 27 from 21 balls with four fours. Jahzara Claxton scored 9 from six balls, while Pandey gave the innings a late push with 8 from just two balls before being run out. Trinbago reached 150 in 18.2 overs and finished on 155.
Barbados began their chase with Qiana Joseph and Hayley Matthews putting together 40 before Matthews was dismissed for 19 from 13 balls. Joseph made 25 from 21 balls, but her dismissal soon after left Barbados under pressure. Kiran Navgire and Maddy Green tried to rebuild the innings and gave their side hope. Navgire scored 28 from 21 balls, while Green struck 24 from 16, but Trinbago kept finding wickets whenever the partnership looked settled.
Green hit three fours and one six, while Navgire also cleared the boundary once and found the fence twice. Naijanni Cumberbatch made 6, Suzie Bates scored 1, and Pooja Vastrakar managed 2 as Barbados lost wickets in the middle overs. Afy Fletcher added 13 from 10 balls with two fours, but the target was already becoming difficult. With the lower order unable to provide enough runs, Barbados were dismissed for 134 in 18.4 overs and fell 21 runs short.
Pandey was the standout performer for Trinbago, finishing with three wickets for 17 runs from 3.4 overs. She removed Matthews, Cumberbatch and Fletcher and kept the chase under control during the later stages. Qiana Joseph also impressed with the ball, taking 3 for 27, while Hayley Matthews and Suzie Bates picked up two wickets each. Samara Ramnath added two wickets for 16 runs, giving Trinbago another important bowling option.
The result came from Trinbago’s ability to recover after a quick start and then keep Barbados from building a long partnership. The Knight Riders had reached 50 in only 4.2 overs and moved to 100 by 11.6 overs, but Barbados fought back with wickets. In the chase, the Tridents reached 50 in 6.4 overs and 100 in 11.1 overs, yet they could not maintain the same pace after losing key batters.
Trinbago Knight Riders Women therefore opened their WCPL campaign with two points, while Barbados Tridents Women finished the match without a point. The 155-run total proved just enough because the Knight Riders combined attacking batting with timely wickets. For Barbados, Navgire and Green showed promise during the chase, but the team could not finish the job. Pandey’s three-wicket spell finally closed the game and gave Trinbago a winning start.
