South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp Advocates for more Women’s Test

In recent years, women’s cricket has seen significant strides, particularly in the shorter formats like T20. However, South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp believes that more attention should be given to the longest format of the game, Test cricket, to elevate standards and foster player development.

Kapp, who made her international Test debut in 2014, emphasizes the importance of playing more Test matches. Despite her impressive record, including a 150 against England in 2022, she has only participated in four Tests. This limited exposure is a common challenge faced by many female cricketers. Since 2010, a mere 19 women’s Test series have taken place, with nine of those being between England and Australia, as one-off matches.

South Africa last played a Test match against England in December 2024. South Africa ended up on the losing side by 286 runs. “The longest format requires the most skill,” Kapp noted in an interview with Reuters. “Playing more Test cricket can enhance players’ skills and benefit the game overall.” She argues that the experience gained from Test matches is invaluable for personal and team growth.

Kapp supports a balanced calendar that includes all formats. “For me, it’s about getting as much international women’s cricket as possible,” she stated. The inclusion of various formats ensures that players face diverse challenges, leading to well-rounded development. While T20 leagues are a significant part of this growth, Kapp acknowledges their positive impact on the game.

The T20 format has flourished globally with the emergence of lucrative franchise leagues like the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Big Bash League, The Hundred, and more. Kapp herself has benefited from this trend, being signed by Delhi Capitals for $181,000 in the WPL’s inaugural auction. She believes these leagues not only provide financial opportunities but also exposure for second- and third-tier players, which strengthens the overall talent pool.

Marizanne Kapp has scored 315 runs at a strike rate of 125 and an impressive average of 31.50 in 17 innings for the Delhi Capitals across the first three seasons of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) so far. Besides her contributions with the bat, she has also picked up 26 wickets at an impressive average of 19.53 and an economy of 5.97 in 22 innings. Her tally of wickets includes one five-wicket haul with the ball for the Capitals.

Marizanne Kapp highlighted the WPL’s role in preparing players for significant tournaments like the upcoming one-day World Cup in India. “Playing in these conditions is a massive help,” she said, emphasising the importance of familiarity with local conditions for team success.

While the T20 leagues have advanced the women’s game, Kapp’s call for more Test cricket underscores the value of diverse formats in enhancing player skills and growing the sport overall. By embracing both Test cricket and T20 leagues, women’s cricket can continue to evolve and become more competitive on the global stage.
