In a landmark achievement, New Zealand’s star all-rounder Melie has etched her name in history by clinching the prestigious Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2024. Kerr outshone formidable contenders, including South African captain Laura Wolvaardt, Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu, and Australian all-rounder Annabel Sutherland, to secure the top honour.

Kerr’s dominance across all three disciplines of the game – batting, bowling, and fielding – was unparalleled throughout the year. Her exceptional fielding efforts consistently lifted New Zealand’s performances, while her mastery with the ball as a leg-spinner made her one of the world’s most lethal strike bowlers and with the bat, Kerr was the anchor of New Zealand’s lineup, displaying remarkable versatility by either building on solid starts or steadying the ship when early wickets fell.
Introduced in 2017, the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy has previously been awarded to Australia’s Ellyse Perry, India’s Smriti Mandhana, and England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt – each of whom won the title twice. Melie Kerr has now joined this elite group, becoming the first New Zealander to win this coveted trophy.
The defining moment of Kerr’s remarkable year came at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, where she delivered breathtaking performances to help New Zealand claim their maiden title in Dubai. She was named Player of the Tournament and Player of the Match in the final, showcasing her all-round brilliance to secure a memorable victory against South Africa.
In the final, Kerr’s batting heroics were on full display as she scored a match-winning 43 off 38 balls, anchoring New Zealand’s innings to a competitive total of 158/5. Coming in during the second over, she steadied the innings before departing in the penultimate over. With the ball, Kerr produced a game-changing spell of 3/24, including two crucial wickets in a single over to derail South Africa’s chase. Her outstanding fielding, highlighted by a spectacular catch, further underlined her value to the team.
Kerr’s statistics for 2024 showcase her dominance across formats. In nine ODIs, she amassed 264 runs at an impressive average of 33 while also claiming 14 wickets. Her bowling brilliance included four-wicket hauls against India and Australia.
However, it was her T20I performances that truly defined her year. In 18 matches, Kerr scored 387 runs at an average of 24.18 and scalped 29 wickets, setting a national record for most T20I wickets in a single calendar year.
At the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, her 15 wickets were the highest ever in a single tournament, achieved at a phenomenal average of 7.33. Her ability to consistently dismiss key opposition batters was pivotal, as seen in her prized scalps of Deandra Dottin in the semi-final and Laura Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch in the final.
Melie Kerr’s triumph marks a watershed moment for New Zealand cricket. As the recipient of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, Kerr has set a new benchmark for excellence in women’s cricket, inspiring future generations of players worldwide.
