The 14th over bowled by Deepti Sharma against New Zealand on Friday at Dubai International Cricket Stadium culminated with a lot of drama.
Amelia Kerr completed a single after hitting the ball to Harmanpreet Kaur at long off. While Kerr was happy with the single, her captain Sophie Devine, batting at the other end, had other plans. Devine pushed for a second and Kaur threw the ball at the wicket-keeper’s end for India stumper Richa Ghosh to run out Kerr who was well short of her ground.
Kerr decided to walk off. However, the reserve umpire asked her to wait. After a number of discussions between Kaur and the on-field umpires and replays of all the action that had taken place on the last ball of the Sharma over, the umpires called back Kerr. India head coach Amol Muzumdar was also seen having an animated discussion with the umpires but in the end, things didn’t go in the favour of Women in Blue.
In one of the replays, the umpire was clearly seen giving back the cap to Deepti which hints at the fact that “Call of Over” was made and once this call is made the ball becomes dead as per the cricketing Law. Once the ball is dead, there cannot be any further action.
While the Indian fans were left disappointed, in the end, it could be safely assumed that the right decision was made.
