Reflecting on the electrifying atmosphere of India-Pakistan matches, Rodrigues shared her enthusiasm for this historic rivalry. She noted, “I was born in 2000, but the rivalry started long before that. What makes the India-Pakistan game so exciting and competitive is the fans. More than the players, it’s the fans who make it special.” The thrill of competing in such a charged environment is something she cherishes, feeling an immense responsibility to help her team secure victory. “There’s an added responsibility when you’re out there — to make sure Team India wins. That brings out the best in us.”

On a personal note, Rodrigues reminisced about her remarkable performance against Pakistan, where she scored 53 runs to lead her team to victory. “First and foremost, India won. There’s no better feeling than hitting the winning runs.” She described the emotional moment of dedicating her achievement to her parents in the stands, saying, “Lifting my bat to them was an unforgettable moment.”

When it comes to her role in the World Cup, Rodrigues emphasizes simplicity and adaptability. She expressed, “For me, it’s all about assessing the conditions and playing the situation. I just want to keep it simple and do whatever it takes to help the team win.” Her dedication to the team is palpable, stating, “Whenever it comes to the team, I go and give my life out there. That gets me more passionate, energetic, and enthusiastic.” She is resolute in her focus on teamwork, underscoring, “We, as a unit, want Team India to win.”

Rodrigues also reflected on the evolving nature of women’s cricket, highlighting the mix of youth and experience within the current team. She remarked, “Every generation has its own specialty and way of playing. For this team, it’s a mix of absolute youngsters and some like me who have had experience.”

The blend of skills and knowledge within the squad strengthens their approach, and she noted the importance of unity, saying, “This team is special. There’s something in this team, a fire to win, and at the same time, an energy and bond that’s very special. We keep talking about sticking to our processes in team meetings and doing whatever it takes to help Team India win. That’s the entire goal of this team.”

Reflecting on her experiences in the 2018 World Cup, she recalled, “In the 2018 World Cup, I remember Smriti playing an outstanding knock. Our team dominated that match, and the way we executed our game plan was incredible. Until then, Australia had always been seen as the dominant team, but we showed what we were capable of.”

Jemimah also praised her teammate Smriti Mandhana for her maturity and insight into the game, saying, “What stands out about Smriti is her maturity. Even though she’s young, she understands the game and her role so well.” Rodrigues appreciates the vice-captain’s ability to connect with players on a personal level, adding, “She doesn’t just tell you to do something her way; she puts herself in your shoes and offers advice that works for you.”

Regarding Harmanpreet Kaur, Rodrigues recognizes her teammate’s ability to thrive under pressure, stating, “Harman di is a big-match player.” The entire squad is motivated to win not just for India, but also for Kaur, who deeply desires to claim the trophy. She concluded, “If I see her lifting the trophy, I know I’ll start crying.”

She also shared her admiration for New Zealand’s Sophie Devine, recalling a memorable moment from her early cricketing days. “Sophie is a wonderful person and has done so much for New Zealand cricket. I remember watching her hit five sixes in a row at my first Under-19 camp.” Rodrigues respects Devine’s skills and has prepared extensively for their matchup.

During the warmup against the West Indies, Rodrigues demonstrated her form with a solid 52 runs off 40 balls, contributing significantly to India’s total of 141 for 8, leading to a 20-run victory.

Having made her T20 World Cup debut in 2018 with a standout 59 against New Zealand, Rodrigues has since accumulated 339 runs in 15 matches. Her recent milestone of 100 T20I appearances showcases her dedication to the sport, complementing her impressive track record of over 2000 runs and a career-best score of 76.

India’s campaign kicks off on October 4 against New Zealand, followed by high stakes matches against Pakistan on October 6, Sri Lanka on October 9, and Australia on October 13.
