Ireland name squad for home England series, starts September 7

Since last hosting England for a bilateral series—an only T20I in 2012 and an ODI series way back in 1990—Ireland will welcome a new-look England side for a 3-match ODI and 2-match T20I series on home soil in the closing weeks of the 2024 summer, from the 7th to the 15th of September.

Riding high on confidence after a historic series win over Sri Lanka on home soil, where they drew the 2-match T20I series 1-1 and clinched the ODI series 2-1, Ireland’s national selectors have shown faith in the same squad for the upcoming series against England, aiming to build on this momentum and make further strides in the ICC Women’s Championship standings.

The 3-match ODI series is part of the ICC Women’s Championship, with Ireland currently sitting at the bottom 10th place, having secured only two wins from 15 games. Ireland’s chances of improving their standing are bolstered by the return of Gaby Lewis, who was sidelined midway through the Sri Lanka series due to a quad strain. Lewis will also captain the squad in the absence of regular skipper Laura Delany, who remains out with an ankle injury.

Alice Tector, who earned her maiden call-up during the Sri Lanka series, retains her spot, while Una Raymond-Hoey, who made her return after a four-year absence but was sidelined due to injury after just one game, is now fit and available for selection. With only one win over England from 17 ODIs, an in-form Ireland will be eager to improve this record.

On the back of an excellent domestic season, Alice Tector earned her maiden call-up for the ODI series against Sri Lanka and is the only addition to Ireland’s T20I squad from their previous series, poised to make her T20I debut. Ireland seeks their first-ever win against England, having lost both of their prior T20I matches.

England has also announced their squad for the series against Ireland. With the T20 World Cup in early October and a training camp in mid-September, the squad features seven debutants—Hannah Baker, Georgia Davis (ODI only), Charis Pavely (T20 only), Ryana MacDonald-Gay, Paige Scholfield, Georgia Adams (T20 only), and Seren Smale. Senior pacer Kate Cross has been appointed captain for this tour.

The squad also sees the return of Mady Villiers to the senior team for the first time since 2021, after recent appearances with the ‘A’ team, alongside Issy Wong. Left-arm pacer Mahika Gaur returns from a side strain that kept her out of the New Zealand series and The Hundred. England has remained unbeaten in the 2024-25 season thus far, winning all their T20Is against Pakistan and New Zealand and sweeping the ODIs against both teams. This new-look team, though experienced at the domestic level, will want to build on their perfect record and continue their winning streak.
