South Africa Women’s Team gears up for T20 World Cup 2024 with training camp

Following their June-July tour of India, South Africa’s women’s team regrouped earlier this month in Tshwane for a specialized skills training camp at the CSA Centre of Excellence. As preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup gain momentum, they will gather again for a training camp at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium in Durban from August 25-30.

The Tshwane training camp was structured into two focused sessions: a bowling camp from August 5-7 and a batting camp from August 6-8.

Players in the bowling camp included:

Anneke Bosch, Annerie Dercksen, Ayanda Hlubi, Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, Suné Luus, Eliz-Mari Marx, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Seshnie Naidu, Tumi Sekhukhune, Nondumiso Shangase, Miané Smit, Delmi Tucker

Players in the batting camp included:

Anneke Bosch, Tazmin Brits, Annerie Dercksen, Mieke De Ridder, Lara Goodall, Sinalo Jafta, Suné Luus, Eliz-Mari Marx, Nondumiso Shangase, Tumi Sekhukhune, Nondumiso Shangase, Miané Smit, Delmi Tucker, Faye Tunnicliffe

The upcoming camp, scheduled from August 25 to 30, will focus on scenario training and intra-squad matches. The 2024 T20 World Cup, originally set to be held in Bangladesh, has been relocated to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to political and social unrest, and will now take place on the same dates, from 3 to 20 October 2024.

South Africa, having finished as runners-up in the home T20 World Cup last year, will be aiming to improve on that result. They are drawn into Group B alongside Bangladesh, Scotland, England, and the West Indies. Their campaign opener will feature a rematch of last year’s semifinal, as South Africa faces England.

The Durban camp will feature familiar faces, mostly international players, as the selectors aim to finalize the World Cup squad. South Africa’s captain, Laura Wolvaardt, and veteran all-rounder, Marizanne Kapp, will also be part of this camp after missing the previous one due to their commitments in The Hundred.

However, seasoned all-rounder Chloé Tryon will miss the camp as she has flown to Trinidad to participate in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) following her stint in The Hundred.

Established all-rounder Nadine de Klerk will attend the camp to continue her rehabilitation from an Achilles injury. Meanwhile, Delmi Tucker, who recently underwent successful surgery on her right shoulder after being diagnosed with rotator cuff tendinopathy, has been ruled out for the remainder of 2024.

Players in the Durban squad includes:

Anneke Bosch, Tazmin Brits, Annerie Dercksen, Mieke de Ridder, Lara Goodall, Ayanda Hlubi, Sinalo Jafta, Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, Suné Luus, Eliz-Mari Marx, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Seshnie Naidu, Tumi Sekhukhune, Nondumiso Shangase, Miané Smit, Faye Tunnicliffe, Laura Wolvaardt

Commenting on the Durban squad, interim head coach Dillon du Preez shared, “The outcome of the Durban camp will be crucial to help us ensure that we have the best possible squad ready for the World Cup. With the camp largely focusing on match scenarios, it will give us a final opportunity to assess all the players and to start finalising their roles,” concluding by confirming that they are close to finalizing the squad.
