The Barbados Royals are entering the 2024 Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) with a strong squad focused on defending their championship title. Hayley Matthews and Amanda-Jade Wellington, key figures in the Royals’ successful campaign last season, lead the retained players list. Scheduled from August 21 to 29, the 2024 WCPL will unfold in Trinidad, with every match scheduled at the renowned Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
Matthews, renowned for her dynamic batting and dependable off-spin bowling, has been a cornerstone of the Royals’ triumphs in past seasons. Her dual abilities make her a crucial player across all formats of the game. Wellington, the Australian leg-spinner, has been retained to bolster the Barbados Royals with her adept bowling and batting skills lower down the order. Her significant influence was evident in last season’s final against the Guyana Amazon Warriors, where she made a mark with a commendable haul of 4 wickets.
New additions to the team include Chamari Athapaththu and Georgia Redmayne. Athapaththu, a dynamic Sri Lankan opener known for her aggressive batting style, has scored 1,063 runs and claimed 13 wickets in 51 WBBL matches. Redmayne, the Australian wicket-keeper, is noted for her secure glove work and impactful batting, amassing 2,436 runs in her WBBL career with a highest score of 98 runs. Her skills in both wicket-keeping and batting make her a vital addition to the Royals’ squad.
