Alex Blackwell and Rachael Haynes have been re-signed by Sydney Thunders for the upcoming season of the Women’s Big Bash League. While Blackwell has signed a year’s contract with the franchise, Haynes’ deal extends to two years.
Rachael Haynes has been given the responsibility of captaining the side, while with the extension in Blackwell’s contract will be playing a record-equaling 19th season of domestic cricket. The 35-year-old Blackwell who is also Thunder’s all-time leading run-getter told Cricket Australia, “Continual improvement as a batter and team member is what I always look to achieve. This season I will be juggling more responsibilities away from the playing field and I’m confident this will enhance my enjoyment of playing the game.”
While on the other hand Haynes who’s replacing Blackwell as the captain told AAP. “It’s something I’ve done throughout my career and I’m comfortable in my ability to lead the team.” She also mentioned that the former captain, Blackwell was really supportive about her taking over the lead.
Sydney Thunder will begin their campaign with a derby clash against Sydney Sixers on October 18.
