Expressing her enthusiasm, Johnston stated, “I’m super excited to be playing for the Hurricanes for two more seasons! They gave me an opportunity to play in the WBBL when I was young, so I am confident that I can help contribute to their success this year and in coming seasons.” This renewal of her contract underscores her gratitude to the Hurricanes for believing in her potential from an early stage.

Johnston’s journey with the Hurricanes began impressively when she debuted as an 18-year-old in 2021. Partnering with then-captain Rachel Priest, Johnston displayed remarkable poise, quickly establishing herself as a promising talent in the league. Her debut season was evidence to her skills as she amassed 214 runs across 13 innings, highlighted by a standout performance of 63 runs off 46 balls against the Melbourne Renegades.

Her skill was not limited to batting, Johnston also excelled with the ball, capturing 13 wickets with an economy rate of 6.14 runs per over, one of the most economical in the WBBL. Her best bowling figures of 4-8 further showcased her all-around capabilities, marking her as a critical asset for the Hurricanes.

Throughout WBBL|09, Johnston maintained her form and featured in every match for the Hurricanes. Batting in the middle to lower order, she played a crucial role, often stabilizing the innings and exerting pressure on bowling units. Her top score last season was 26 off 23 balls against the Brisbane Heat, a match that held special significance as she performed in front of her family and friends and faced her cousin, Ellie, who was part of the extended Heat squad.

Salliann Beams, the General Manager of High Performance at Cricket Tasmania, praised Johnston’s development and potential. “We have seen Ruth perform fantastically for the Hurricanes across the past few seasons, and we know she is one of the best young talents on our list. She has always had a desire to continue to get better, and to have such a cool head in difficult situations shows that she has experience beyond her years and will continue to play a key role for us in the coming years,” Beams stated.

Johnston’s re-signing adds to the Hurricanes’ strong roster, joining other key players such as Heather Graham, Hayley Silver-Holmes, Amy Smith, Molly Strano, and Rachel Trenaman. With Johnston’s re-signing, the Hurricanes have reinforced their commitment to nurturing young talent and striving for excellence in the upcoming WBBL seasons.

As new signings and re-signings are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, the Hurricanes are gearing up for a competitive season.
