“I always wanted to be the fastest bowler in the world,” says Shabnim Ismail

In the dynamic world of cricket, where talent and passion converge, there are few players who leave an indelible mark with their fiery performances and unwavering dedication. One such standout player is Shabnim Ismail, the South African pacer who has been setting the cricketing world ablaze with her blistering pace and relentless spirit. Amidst a formidable overseas arsenal of the Mumbai Indians, Ismail’s acquisition raised eyebrows. With stalwarts like Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Amelia Kerr, Issy Wong, and Chloe Tyron already in the mix, the question lingered: where would she fit? However, Ismail quickly dispelled any doubts with her remarkable performance on the field.

In the 2024 edition of the WPL, Mumbai Indians relinquished their crown, failing to make it to the final. Despite this setback, Ismail emerged as a shining beacon of resilience and excellence for the franchise. Renowned for her prowess in the PowerPlay overs, Ismail demonstrated her mastery by claiming five out of her eight wickets within the first six overs while maintaining an exceptional economy rate throughout the league.

“ She (Jhulan Goswami) is one person I looked up to among many other fast bowlers. We spoke about a lot of things in training; it’s more about just making those small tweaks to ensure that I become a bit quicker, maybe running in a bit faster.”

One of the standout moments of Ismail’s campaign came when she unleashed a thunderous delivery clocking 132.1 kmph, the fastest recorded in the women’s game, during a league fixture against the Delhi Capitals. Fondly referred to as ‘the Demon’ for her adept use of fiery bouncers, Ismail’s impact transcended mere statistics; it embodied the relentless pursuit of excellence and the unwavering commitment to her craft.

Shabnim Ismail reflected on her journey with the Mumbai Indians and the invaluable experiences garnered along the way. Sharing the dressing room with cricketing legends like Jhulan Goswami and Harmanpreet Kaur, Ismail found inspiration and camaraderie, which fueled her passion for the game even further.

“Oh, I love Harry… I’m not going to lie. She’s one of the comedians on the team. Whenever I see her on the bus, whenever she looks at me, we just have good banter and good laughs.”

For Ismail, cricket isn’t just a sport; it’s a way of life—a relentless pursuit of greatness fueled by unwavering determination and boundless passion. Despite hanging up her international boots, Ismail’s thirst for success remains unquenchable. With each stride on the field, she epitomizes the ethos of resilience, perseverance, and self-belief.

“For me, it’s really simple. It’s more about keeping fit and doing the hard yards behind the scenes, and I don’t think anything has changed now that I’ve stopped playing international cricket. I still have that attitude of wanting to be the best, wanting to be the quickest in the world.”

As she continues to defy age and expectations, Ismail’s journey serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring cricketers worldwide. With her never-say-die attitude and unyielding spirit, she embodies the essence of cricket—an endless pursuit of excellence against all odds.

In the ever-evolving landscape of women’s cricket, Shabnim Ismail stands tall as a symbol of resilience, determination, and unmatched skill—a true trailblazer in every sense of the word.
