Sachin Tendulkar honours Shafali Verma and Co. for Historic U19 World Cup Victory

The victorious bunch of the India Under-19 Women’s Team made their trip back home to India, from South Africa where they on the 29th of January, scripted history. The day not just saw the India Under-19 win the silverware in the inaugural edition of the Under-19 Women’s Twenty20 (T20) World Cup but also saw the Indian women’s team cabinet get the first International Cricket Council (ICC) event trophy.

In calls for celebration, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, Jay Shah, Tweeted, “It is with great delight I share that Bharat Ratna Shri @sachin_rt and @BCCI Office Bearers will felicitate the victorious India U19 team on Feb 1st in Narendra Modi Stadium at 6:30 PM IST. The young cricketers have made India proud and we will honour their achievements.”

The young cricketers have made India proud and we will honour their achievements.”

Come the 1st of February, the game day of the series decided between India and New Zealand, before the start of match proceedings at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, in front of well over 70,000 people, the BCCI felicitated the victorious bunch. Acknowledging the crowd, Sachin Tendulkar, said, “Kem cho Ahmedabad? Maja ma?”

Sachin Tendulkar got to business immediately in appreciating the side’s efforts. He stated, “Firstly, I would like to congratulate our women’s under-19 cricket team for winning the World Cup. What a fabulous achievement. I can assure you that the entire nation and well-wishers of Indian cricket will celebrate and cherish this victory for years to come.

“To me, the dream started in 1983 when I was only ten years old. By you winning this World Cup, you have actually given birth to many dreams. There are so many young girls in India and beyond who aspire to be like you. So big, big congratulations on that. You have a responsibility because you have become role models now. I’m sure you’ll go from strength to strength and achieve many more laurels for our country.”

India at the World Cup competed against 7 teams and suffered their only defeat in the tournament against Australia. An unforgettable highlight of the side remains their positive approach while playing, New Zealand in the Semi-Final and England in the Final, as the two were unbeaten in the tournament but only until they’d not met India.

Acknowledging India’s performance, he added, “This performance is a magnificent performance and I feel it is so much like a blossoming tree with beautiful flowers and fruits which everyone admires.”

Sachin then recognized “contributions of the roots and the solid foundation that tree has got,” indicating towards the former women cricketers, “who have inspired generations”. He couldn’t help naming a few as she mentioned, “I feel just to name a few Shantha Rangaswamy, Diana Edulji, Anjum Chopra, Mithali Raj, Jhulan (Goswami) the list goes on and on.”

Players from the under-19 and the senior teams worldwide have laid their eyes on the Women’s Premier League (WPL) that’s due to get underway in March with its inaugural edition.

Sachin too, in his address, couldn’t miss out on the hot topic, the WPL, and stated, “I think it is a time where women cricket will really really do well and not just that, the beginning of WPL is going to be the biggest thing. So I want to wish the BCCI and all the members of BCCI the very best of luck. I believe in equality for men and women and this is a great platform for you to go out and do it. Not just spot, but generally in all spheres.

“I think equality, equal opportunity is important. I want to wish the BCCI members and the players the very best of luck for WPL. And big, big congratulations to you on your great achievement. All the very best.”

BCCI’s sparkling and glittery felicitation ceremony also saw Shafali Verma on behalf of the team and support staff receive an INR 5 crore check, which she then posed with in presence of all directories while a fine firework in the background put a fitting end.
