Mark Coles returns to coach Pakistan’s Women’s Team

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) under the regime of Najam Sethi, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s management committee is bringing reforms left, right and centre and following the lead of the national men’s team, is reportedly in talks to get back Mickey Arthur, for the national women’s team too, they will have Mark Coles back at the helm as Head Coach.

A look back at his previous tenure is memorable as after Pakistan defeated New Zealand in 2017, Mark Coles received a two-year contract to continue coaching the women’s team. Due to personal reasons, he left his position as Pakistan’s head coach in 2019 during Ehsan Mani’s tenure.

His final coaching position was with the Scotland Women’s team for almost a year till January 2022 where he led them to success in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup European Qualifier in Spain in August 2021 and led them in the right direction. However, when he coached the Pakistan Women’s Team during his previous stint, they triumphed in 12 ODIs and 8 T20I games. So when the PCB approached him for the role, he was ready to hop back on the bandwagon and start off right from where he left off.

Reiterating the role of foreign coaches, Najam Sethi said, “We need to bring foreign coaches so that the favoritism culture finishes. We are bringing back Mark Coles as women’s team coach”. With a lot of cricket coming up in 2023 and most importantly, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, it will be interesting to see how Mark Coles is able to change the fortunes of the team.
