The rising Irish youngster who was in the headlines just a month back for becoming the youngest international centurion as she scored an unbeaten 121 off 127 balls against Zimbabwe, a feat she achieved on her 16th birthday has been named as the Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman for the month of October.

Like every month, the judging panel had a difficult task with women from various sports in the country giving a tough competition to each other. The Irish Times in an article on their website mentioned some of the top names who were in contention for the award. Some of which are the Irish football team who had their greatest away win in the World Cup qualifiers, the hockey team reaching successive World Cups for the first time. Gymnast Emma Slevin, the first one from the country to qualify for all-around finals at the world championship, and several more from races, cycling, and other games as well but Hunter’s historic achievement made her the best deserved from the rest.

The fact that Hunter achieved the feat in her first-ever ODI series for the country after making her national debut in May this year in the T20 against Scotland, makes this extra special and appreciable. After failing to perform well in the first three ODIs on Zimbabwe soil, Hunter showed her potential in the fourth ODI and went on to take the team to a 3-1 series win.

Her form and Ireland’s performance are a positive sign for the team ahead of the world cup qualifiers this month in Zimbabwe.
