The Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams have reached the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics 2020. While the men’s team has reached the semi-final after 40 years, having played their last in 1980, the year in which they won the gold medal, the women’s team has reached the semi-final of the Olympics for the first time. It is a historic moment for the women’s team, who are just one win away from giving India its first-ever Olympic medal in women’s hockey.
The women’s team beat the mighty Australians by a margin of 1-0 in the quarterfinal. Beating the number 2 team in the world was by no means India’s cup of tea but the team led by their gritty captain Rani Rampal showed excellent resilience during the course of the match. Gurjit Kaur was the lone scorer in the match as she converted India’s only penalty corner in the 22nd minute to give India the much-needed lead against the table-toppers of Group B.
After the women’s hockey team’s emphatic win on August 2, cricketers across India showered praise on Rani Rampal and co. The Women in Blue will take on Belgium in the semi-final on August 4.
