Sophie Devine Stars as Perth Scorchers Beat Adelaide Strikers by 9 Runs in Rain Curtailed Contest

The eleventh edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) delivered a controlled and composed performance from Perth Scorchers Women, who clinched their second win from four matches with a 9-run victory (DLS method) over Adelaide Strikers Women on Saturday. The result also marked the Strikers’ second loss in three games, adding early pressure to their campaign.

In a rain-interrupted contest, the Strikers struggled to stitch together partnerships and were bowled out for 112 in 17.4 overs. Ellie Johnston was the standout performer, producing a fluent and confident 33 off 21 balls with 4 fours and 1 six at a strike rate of 157.14.

Bridget Patterson held the middle order together briefly with 21 off 22, while Megan Schutt’s late unbeaten 16 off 11 injected some urgency. But with wickets tumbling at regular intervals, the Strikers failed to convert starts into a competitive total.

Perth’s bowlers executed their plans with precision. Captain Sophie Devine spearheaded the attack with an excellent 3/12 from 3 overs, consistently striking at key moments. Ruby Strange (2/16) and Lilly Mills (1/13) maintained tight lines, while Amy Edgar (1/23), Alana King (1/17) and Chloe Ainsworth (1/30) provided valuable support, ensuring Adelaide never built sustained momentum.

Chasing the target of 113, the Scorchers approached the innings with calm assurance. Katie Mack anchored the pursuit with a steady, composed 24* off 30 balls, while Mikayla Hinkley added 12 off 17 to keep the innings moving. Despite the early loss of Beth Mooney (0 off 1), Devine remained unbeaten on 5, guiding her side safely through a tricky phase.

At 9.1 overs, rain returned with the Scorchers at 55/2 — a score 9 runs ahead of the DLS par at that point. That cushion proved decisive as Perth were declared winners by 9 runs (DLS).

With this well-managed chase, the Scorchers secured their second win from four outings, regaining balance in their campaign, while the Strikers fell to their second defeat in three matches. Sophie Devine’s all-round impact earned her the Player of the Match award, capping off a clinical outing for the Scorchers.
