Match 4: Shafali Verma’s Maiden WBBL Fifty ensures 5 Wicket Win over Hobart Hurricanes

The fourth match of the seventh edition of Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) was played between Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Sixers at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Sunday. Sydney Sixers won the toss and elected to bowl first.

1st innings Hobart Hurricanes 125-9 in 20 overs

Batting first, Hobart Hurricanes posted a competitive total of 125-9 in 20 overs. India’s wicket-keeper bat Richa Ghosh top scored with run a ball 46. The right hand bat hit one boundary and three sixes. Apart from her, Sasha Moloney was the other major contributor with the bat scoring 22 runs off 16 balls, including four boundaries. For Sydney Sixers, Nicole Bolton, Ellyse Perry, Maitlan Brown and Radha Yadav scalped two wickets apiece. Off spinner Ashleigh Gardner struck with one wicket.

2nd innings Sydney Sixers 129-5 in 19.3 overs

The world number 2 T20I bat Shafali Verma led the run chase with a brisk 57 off 50 balls, including half a dozen boundaries. Sydney Sixers’ skipper Ellyse Perry chipped in with a patient 27 off 33 balls, hitting three boundaries. Nicole Bolton also contributed with an unbeaten 17 off 19 balls lower down the order. Sixers chased down the target in the last over, winning the match by five wickets and three balls to spare. For Hobart Hurricanes, it was right arm off spinner Molly Strano, who was the pick of the bowlers as she accounted for 3-19 in her four overs. Right arm pace duo of Tayla Vlaeminck and Nicole Carey scalped one wicket apiece.

Sydney Sixers’ opening bat Shafali Verma won the player of the match award for her stellar performance with the bat (57 runs off 50 balls, 4s:6).
