New Zealand made it three wins out of three wins in the group stages of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 after registering a comprehensive win versus West Indies today in their Group C match at Potchefstroom. West Indies however are second on their group table and would not let this loss affect them having two out of their three matches. New Zealand won the toss and decided to field first.
West Indies had a very forgettable batting outing getting dismissed for a paltry 68. Shunelle Sawh was the first among the batters to be dismissed for 5 off 18 by Anna Browning. Naijanni Cumberbatch and Zaida James were the next in line to get dismissed in the same over by Olivia Anderson. With Trishan Holder, Djenaba Joseph and Shalini Samaroo dismissals in successive overs, the spine of the West Indies batting was broken. Kate Chandler scalped two of these important wickets. A rare hit wicket dismissal of Jannillea Glasgow ensured West Indies was 8 down with no chances of survival. Earnisha Fontaine’s late flourish meant that the Caribbean team ended with 68 on the board in 19.2 overs. Kate Chandler with her three wickets and Olivia Anderson and Abigail Hotton with their two wickets each besides Anna Browning and Kayley Knight’s one wicket were instrumental in restricting West Indies.
New Zealand chased down the total with ease in 7.2 overs as Anna Browning with her 28 coming off 22 balls and Georgia Plimmer with her 41 coming off 22 balls sealed the deal.
