Alexia Kontopirakis Anchors Italy Women as Bowlers Seal Win Over Rwanda

Italy opened their campaign in the ICC Women’s T20I Challenge Trophy 2026 with a clinical 16-run win (DLS method) over Rwanda in a rain-curtailed encounter at the Gahanga International Cricket Stadium in Kigali on Saturday. The match, reduced due to interruptions, saw Italy put up a competitive 72 for 1 in 11 overs before restricting Rwanda to 50 for 4 in a revised seven-over chase. A combination of controlled batting and disciplined bowling ensured Italy started the tournament on a strong note.

Batting first, Italy were anchored by an assured knock from Alexia Kontopirakis, who remained unbeaten on 45 off 37 deliveries. Her innings formed the backbone of Italy’s total, as she paced her knock effectively in a shortened format where timing and strike rotation were crucial. Kontopirakis found the boundary four times and cleared it once, maintaining a strike rate of over 120 while ensuring stability at the crease.

Italy’s innings began cautiously, with Kumudu Peddrick managing just 6 off 11 balls before being dismissed by Ruth Uwimana. However, Kontopirakis ensured there was no further damage, building a steady partnership with Ilenia Sims. The duo added valuable runs through the middle overs, balancing caution with calculated aggression.

Sims played a supporting role, finishing unbeaten on 14 off 18 balls, as Italy ended their innings at 72 for 1, a total that proved more than sufficient given the revised conditions. Rwanda’s bowling effort had its moments, with Uwimana picking up the only wicket of the innings and conceding 12 runs in her two overs. Rosine Irera and Rosette Shimwamana were economical, but the inability to take wickets in clusters allowed Italy to maintain control throughout.

Chasing a revised target of 67 in seven overs, Rwanda’s innings got off to a disastrous start. Early strikes from Italy’s bowlers derailed the chase almost immediately, as they lost two wickets within the first over. The pressure of the steep required rate, combined with early breakthroughs, left Rwanda struggling to find any momentum.

Alice Ikuzwe and Clarisse Uwase attempted to rebuild, scoring 10 and 11 respectively, but the lack of acceleration proved costly. Italy’s bowlers, led by Thilini Fernando and Ilenia Sims, maintained tight lines and ensured Rwanda could not break free. Sims, who had contributed with the bat, also made an impact with the ball, picking up two key wickets while conceding just 11 runs in her spell. Fernando matched that effort with two wickets of her own, striking early to put Rwanda on the back foot.

Despite a late effort from Merveille Uwase, who remained unbeaten on 12, Rwanda fell short, finishing at 50 for 4. The early damage proved too much to recover from in a shortened chase.

Italy’s victory was built on a complete performance, a composed innings from Kontopirakis, steady support from Sims, and a disciplined bowling display that applied pressure from the outset. For Rwanda, the result highlighted the challenges of chasing under pressure in reduced overs, particularly after early setbacks. While there were glimpses of resistance, they will need stronger starts and better partnerships going forward.
