After an action-packed 2nd triple header of the tournament, the West Indies, led by skipper Hayley Matthews, were up against a spirited Scotland, led by skipper Kathryn Bryce, in a Group B clash, at Headingley, Leeds on 18th June 2026, in the 12th Match of the ongoing 10th edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, hosted by England and Wales from 12th June to 5th July 2026.

Australia, India and South Africa registered victories in the triple-header on Wednesday (17th June 2026). The experienced duo of Chinelle Henry and veteran legend Stafanie Taylor returned to the side, replacing Zaida James and Shawisha Hector in the starting XI for the West Indies. Scotland retained the same side that took the field against Ireland. Interestingly, both sides were coming into the contest on the back of comprehensive victories to kickstart their campaign in the tournament.

Scotland skipper Kathryn Bryce won the toss and opted to bowl first. The West Indian openers Qiana Joseph and skipper Hayley Matthews got their side off to a cautious start with a 24-run opening stand. Rachel Slater broke the stand by sending Qiana Joseph (13 off 15 balls) back to the pavilion in the 5th over of the innings to provide the 1st breakthrough for Scotland.

Katherine Fraser ended a scratchy stay of the opposition skipper Hayley Matthews (14 off 22 balls) in the 8th over of the innings to provide the massive 2nd breakthrough for her side. The departure of their skipper, yet again, forced the West Indies into the rebuilding phase. Deandra Dottin joined the wicket-keeper batter Shemaine Campbelle at the crease, and the duo put together a crucial 35-run stand for the 3rd wicket, which also took them past the 70-run mark.

Deandra Dottin (14 off 16 balls) ran out of patience and couldn’t curb her natural attacking instinct further, as she missed the ball completely on the attempted lofted shot, resulting in an easy stumping for the Scotland wicket-keeper batter, Sarah Bryce. Skipper Kathryn Bryce provided the 3rd breakthrough for her side in the 13th over of the innings. The Scottish bowlers bounced back to reduce the West Indies to 85/5 in the 15th over of the innings.

Jahzara Claxton (16 off 9 balls) joined Stafanie Taylor at the crease, and the duo, Stafanie Taylor’s (47* off 19 balls) fireworks alongside the youngster, switched the momentum back in favour of the West Indies as they breached the 150-mark, ending with 153/6 in their quota of 20 overs. Katherine Fraser (4-0-34-2), skipper Kathryn Bryce (4-0-30-1), Rachel Slater (4-0-23-1), and Kirstie Gordon (4-0-36-1) were the top performers with the ball for Scotland.

Scotland fails to capitalise on a flying start, fall 7 short

Chasing a decent total of 154, the Scotland openers Katherine Fraser (20 off 11 balls) and Darcey Carter got them off to a flying start, with a counter-attacking 51-run stand inside the powerplay. Skipper Hayley Matthews introduced herself in the final over of the powerplay and brought her side back into the contest with double strikes, removing Katherine Fraser and Sarah Bryce in the space of a couple of balls.

It triggered a mini collapse as they lost half their side in the 11th over of the run chase, with the scoreboard reading as 74/5. Opening batter Darcey Carter held one end and kept the scoreboard ticking even through cramps. She was joined by Darcey Carter, who came out with fearless intent, taking the opposition bowlers on and keeping Scotland interested in the run chase.

The pair stitched a brisk 58-run stand for the 6th wicket, which took them past the 130-run mark. Darcey Carter registered her maiden T20 World Cup half-century (59 off 62 balls) before a moment of wrong shot selection under pressure led to her departure at a crucial stage in the 19th over of the run chase, Aaliyah Alleyne providing the breakthrough for the West Indies. The emotions ran high as Deandra Dottin broke out in tears after conceding a couple of boundaries in a 13-run over.

Ailsa Lister’s (33 off 25 balls) departure on the penultimate ball of the 19th over proved to be the final nail in Scotland’s hopes. Darcey Carter, who worked so hard to keep the game alive for her side, also had tears in her eyes on the sidelines as Scotland were eventually bundled out for 146, in their quota of 20 overs, falling 7 runs short of the target.

Aaliyah Alleyne (2-0-11-3), skipper Hayley Matthews (4-0-19-3), and Afy Fletcher (4-0-16-2) were the standout performers with the ball for the West Indies. Stafanie Taylor was awarded the Player of the Match for her decisive fireworks (47* off 19 balls) with the bat towards the backend as West Indies sealed consecutive victories to kickstart their campaign. Stafanie Taylor (7) now has the most Player of the Match Awards for the West Indies in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup history.
