Fans React as Scotland Fall 7 Runs Short Against West Indies; Stafanie Taylor Wins Praise

For much of the evening at Headingley, Scotland looked capable of pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. They restricted West Indies for long periods, started their chase aggressively, and carried belief deep into the contest. But when the pressure peaked, experience won out. Inspired by a vintage Stafanie Taylor cameo and backed by a disciplined bowling effort, West Indies held their nerve to secure a dramatic seven-run victory.

After being asked to bat, West Indies struggled to gain momentum. Hayley Matthews made 14(22), Deandra Dottin scored 14(16), and wickets fell regularly as Scotland’s bowlers kept things tight. Shemaine Campbelle’s 36 (26) provided stability, while Jahzara Claxton added a brisk 16(9), but at 85/5 in the 15th over, West Indies were in danger of posting an underwhelming total. And then, Taylor changed the game completely.

The veteran all-rounder rolled back the years with a breathtaking unbeaten 47 off just 19 deliveries, striking four boundaries and three sixes. Her assault transformed the innings completely, dragging West Indies from a precarious position to 153/6. Scotland’s bowlers had largely impressed, with Katherine Fraser claiming 2/34, Rachel Slater returning 1/23, and captain Kathryn Bryce conceding only 30 runs from her four overs, but Taylor’s late surge ultimately proved decisive.

Scotland’s chase began fearlessly. Katherine Fraser hammered 20(11) and shared a rapid opening stand with Darcey Carter as the score raced to 51/1 inside six overs. Even after Matthews removed Fraser and captain Kathryn Bryce for a duck, Scotland remained firmly in the hunt. Carter anchored the innings superbly with 59(62), while Ailsa Lister’s attacking 33(25) brought the target within reach. Their sixth-wicket partnership added 58 runs and reduced the equation to a manageable finish heading into the final three overs.

That was when West Indies’ experienced attack seized control. Aaliyah Alleyne produced a crucial spell, removing Carter, Lister and Kirstie Gordon to finish with 3/11 from two overs. Matthews had already laid the foundation with an outstanding 3/19, while Afy Fletcher chipped in with 2/16. Scotland’s chase unraveled at the worst possible moment, losing five wickets for just 14 runs as the required rate climbed.

Rachel Slater’s 7(5) briefly kept hopes alive, but a final-over run-out sealed Scotland’s fate as they were dismissed for 146. The margin was only seven runs, but it was Taylor’s late brilliance and West Indies’ composure under pressure that proved mighty against a strong Scottish side.
