Zaida James represents the next generation of West Indies women’s cricket and is regarded as one of the region’s most promising young all-rounders. Growing up in Gros Islet, St Lucia, she progressed through the domestic ranks at a young age, representing St Lucia, the Windward Islands, West Indies A, and the West Indies Under-19 team before earning a senior international call-up. Her rapid rise reflects both her talent and her versatility, as she contributes with both bat and ball.
Zaida James’ International Career
James made her WT20I debut in January 2023 during the Tri-Nation Series in South Africa and has since become a regular member of the West Indies setup. Although still early in her international career, she has already featured in 30 T20Is, highlighting the faith selectors have placed in her long-term potential. As a left-handed batter and left-arm orthodox spinner, she offers a skillset that brings valuable balance to the side.
In T20 internationals, James has scored 139 runs from 17 innings while also taking 9 wickets with her left-arm spin. Her numbers do not yet fully reflect her potential, but she has shown glimpses of the impact she can make as a utility all-rounder. West Indies have often used her in flexible roles depending on match situations, whether as a lower-order batter capable of accelerating the scoring rate or as a bowler tasked with controlling the middle overs.
At franchise level, James has represented Trinbago Knight Riders in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL), where she has continued to gain valuable experience. Across 13 WCPL matches, she has contributed 74 runs and 4 wickets. While those returns are modest, playing alongside and against experienced international cricketers has helped accelerate her development and expose her to high-pressure T20 environments.
One of James’ biggest strengths is her adaptability. As a left-arm spinner, she provides variation in a bowling attack that is often dominated by right-arm options. Her ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game also gives team management greater flexibility when selecting combinations. Off the field, she has spoken about wanting to inspire young cricketers from St Lucia and has cited all-rounders such as Ben Stokes and Ellyse Perry as players she admires for their ability to influence matches in different ways.
Looking ahead to a T20 World Cup in England, she could play an important supporting role. English conditions often reward disciplined spin bowling, particularly during the middle overs, and her left-arm orthodox bowling could prove useful against right-handed batters. Zaida James possesses the talent and versatility to become a valuable asset for West Indies in the years ahead.
