Afy Fletcher has been one of the most distinctive bowlers in West Indies women’s cricket for nearly two decades. Hailing from Grenada, she is a rare leg-spinner in Caribbean cricket, a skill that has made her a valuable asset throughout her career. Fletcher began playing cricket in her local community before being identified by national coaches, who helped develop her into a disciplined and crafty wicket-taking bowler. Known for her consistency, control and ability to deceive batters with flight and turn, Fletcher has built a reputation as one of the most reliable spinners in the region.

Afy Fletcher’s International Career

Fletcher made her ODI debut for West Indies in 2008 against Ireland and immediately made an impression, claiming 4 for 22 — then the best bowling figures by a West Indies woman on ODI debut. She made her T20I debut shortly afterwards against the Netherlands and featured at the 2009 Women’s World Cup. After falling out of the international setup for more than six years, Fletcher returned in 2015 and re-established herself as a key member of the side.

Her most memorable achievement came in 2016 when she helped West Indies win their maiden Women’s T20 World Cup title. Fletcher claimed 7 wickets during the tournament, including crucial spells against England and India, playing a significant role in the team’s historic triumph. Since then, she has become one of the most experienced players in the squad. Fletcher has played 107 T20Is, taking 101 wickets. She is one of only a handful of West Indies women to surpass 100 wickets in both white-ball formats and remains a dependable option through the middle overs. Her career-best T20I figures of 5 for 13 came against Sri Lanka, earning her maiden five-wicket haul in the format.

Fletcher has also been a regular feature for Barbados Royals in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League. While the WCPL stats do not fully reflect her influence, her experience and control have been valuable assets in helping Barbados Royals secure multiple titles. Across 15 WCPL matches, she has taken 7 wickets while maintaining an economy rate of just over 6 runs per over, often bowling difficult overs against aggressive batters.

As West Indies prepare for the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup, Fletcher brings something few teams possess: an experienced leg-spinner capable of controlling the game in pressure situations. Her variations, accuracy and vast international experience make her a crucial member of the bowling attack, particularly in English conditions where quality spin can still play a decisive role. Even at 39, Fletcher remains one of the most dependable bowlers in the West Indies setup and an important figure in their World Cup campaign.
