The Hundred 2025 retentions announced; Heather Knight, Smriti Mandhana among big names to miss out

The build-up to The Hundred 2025 season, scheduled to kick off on August 5, is in full swing as teams finalize their strategies and prepare for the upcoming player Draft. February 25 marked the crucial retention deadline, where teams decided which players to hold onto while leaving room for new additions during the Draft and Wildcard phases.

All eight teams in The Hundred have finalized their player retentions on February 25, D-Day, allowing up to 10 players per team, including one centrally contracted England player and up to three overseas players, including the newly introduced direct signings.

Teams had the flexibility to decide their retention numbers, allowing clubs the option to maximize on the Draft on March 12, where the majority of squads will be completed. Additional opportunities for squad adjustments will come in May’s Wildcard Draft, enabling teams to sign two standout domestic players.

Notable talking points include major names like Heather Knight, who led London Spirit to championship last season, Sophie Devine, Smriti Mandhana, Chamari Athapaththu, and Issy Wong remaining unsigned or unretained. These players are, however, eligible for the Right to Match during the Draft.

London Spirit stirred attention by retaining Grace Harris over Meg Lanning, who has now joined Oval Invincibles. Meanwhile, Southern Brave, Birmingham Phoenix, and Manchester Originals are the only three teams eligible to sign overseas players, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming Draft, especially with several overseas players searching for clubs.
