Dane Van Niekerk’s roller-coaster cricket journey from setback to comebacks

South African cricket legend Dane van Niekerk celebrates her birthday on 14th May, and fans and fellow players around the world are sending their warmest wishes. With a distinguished international career spanning over a decade, Van Niekerk has made an indelible mark on the sport.

The former captain of the South African women’s cricket team, has played in 194 matches, including 107 One-Day Internationals (ODI), 86 Twenty20 Internationals (T20I), and one Test match against India in 2014. Her contributions to the sport, both on and off the field, have earned her the respect and admiration of fans.

The former Proteas skipper made her debut in March 2009 and managed to score 2,175 runs in ODI cricket, which included nine half-centuries and a career-best score of 102 against Sri Lanka. Additionally, she scored 1,877 runs in T20I cricket, achieving 10 fifties in the process.

The leg spinner was equally impressive with the ball. She took a total of 204 international wickets (138 in ODIs, 65 in T20Is, and 1 in Tests). Her world-record performance of four wickets for zero runs against the West Indies in the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in Leicester, England, was a highlight of her career. Her bowling strike rate of 5.0 in women’s ODI cricket is the fourth-best of all time. Van Niekerk is also one of only six female cricketers to have achieved more than 1,000 runs, 50 wickets, and 50 catches in the one-day game. Her accomplishments on the pitch have made her one of the most distinguished cricketers in South African history.

She had become the captain of the South African women’s cricket team at the age of 23 and excelled in her role as a leader. Under her captaincy, South Africa reached the semi-finals of the 2017 Women’s World Cup, where they put up a strong performance but were ultimately unsuccessful. Despite the loss, van Niekerk felt proud of her team’s achievements and the recognition they received.

In the years following the World Cup, van Niekerk’s reputation continued to rise. She played in various leagues, including the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and the Hundred, where she captained the Oval Invincibles to the inaugural title. However, her ankle injury significantly impacted her career and forced her to spend a long period of time off her feet.

Van Niekerk worked hard to regain her fitness and form, participating in domestic tournaments and addressing any doubts about her ability as a player and leader. However, despite her efforts, she did not make the squad for the T20 World Cup. She expressed her disappointment at not being given the opportunity to prove herself and felt that she had been left out of the team’s training sessions.

Dané van Niekerk’s international cricket career came to an unexpected end due to a simple moment of carelessness. Climbing over a wall instead of taking the stairs led to a severe ankle injury that ruled her out of the women’s 50-over World Cup, an event her team had high hopes for. Van Niekerk’s leadership and on-field performances had already made her one of the best all-rounders in the game, and she had successfully captained South Africa to new heights.
