South Africa pick a consolation win beating Sri Lanka by 10 Wickets

11th contest of cricket at the Commonwealth Games between South Africa and Sri Lanka saw the former bowl Sri Lanka out cheaply for a very low total that South Africa in reply chased down comprehensively to finish their campaign on a high after being out of contention from advancing for the knockouts.

1st innings : Sri Lanka – 46/10 (17.1)

South Africa having won the toss opt to bowl first and had an outing as perfect as it could get with Shabnim Ismail off her first ball striking Hasini Perera to hand her a golden duck. Masabata Klaas from the other end struck off her 2nd ball dismissing Harshitha Madavi on 1(3). Nadine de Klerk was called on to close the powerplay and bagged a couple of wickets dismissing Anushka Sanjeewani on 3(9) and then handed a 5-ball-duck to Nilakshi de Silva to end the powerplay overs on a score of 12-4. Kavisha Dilhari too couldn’t get going and Nadine had her 3rd. Chamari Athapathathu’s resistance on the other end saw curtains as Masabata Klaas’s reintroduction had her walked back on 15(29) and South Africa at the halfway mark were 6 down for 26 on board. Ama Kanchana was run out on 4(10) worsening Sri Lanka’s chances of getting to a respectful total. Mlaba was introduced late into the innings but caused an early impact by dismissing Malsha Shehani on 9(18). Chloe Tryon too having come late into the attack made an instant impact dismissing Sugandika Kumari on a 5-ball-duck. A run-out then saw Oshadi’s resistance come to an end with Sri Lanka bowled out for just 46. For South Africa, Nadine de Klerk bagged 3 wickets in 4 overs conceding only 7 runs to top the wickets chart and had Masabata Klaas with 2, Chloe Tryon, Nonkululeko Mlaba and Shabnim Ismail with a wicket each follow.

STAT : Sri Lanka’s 46 happens to be the lowest women’s T20I total by Sri Lanka, the lowest women’s T20I total in England and also the lowest women’s T20I total against South Africa.

2nd innings : South Africa – 49/0 (6.1)

South Africa chasing a low total of 46, effortlessly made the most of the powerplay overs by sneaking one through the gaps for a boundary and running 1s, 2s and even 3s. The opening pair of Anneke Bosch and Tazmin Brits got South Africa to end the powerplay overs on a score of 45-0. Requiring one for the win, Tazmin Brits struck a boundary and the pair with a 49*(37) partnership got the side to a 10-wicket win. Tazmin Brits and Anneke Bosch remained unbeaten on 21(21) and 20(16) respectively.

STAT : This win for South Africa is their first by 10 wickets and also is their biggest win in terms of balls remaining, 83.

A commanding win this for South Africa to exit their debut edition of the Commonwealth Games. It just was another day in the office for Sri Lanka who with yet another low total make eyebrows frown, the bowling group as well are now starting to feel the pressure and are down on confidence.
