Women’s cricket at Commonwealth Games is 9 days away from marking its debut in Birmingham, England. The historic landmark day has the excitement escalated among the locals and viewers around the globe with the wait shortening for the Games to get underway.
There’s been a lot of confusion around as to why is it Barbados and not West Indies featuring at the Games event, what’s to be understood here is that it’ll be Barbados repressing Cricket West Indies (CWI) at the Commonwealth Games.
It is so because a multinational Caribbean team meant the associated quota had to be awarded to one of the associated countries. Cricket West Indies decided that their domestic, T20 Blaze competition will be their qualifying tournament for the Games but the T20 Blaze was postponed in 2021 and it saw the Barbados team who’d won the title in 2020 make their way to the Commonwealth Games.
The side will be led by Hayley Matthews after a change in leadership took place post-World Cup. Hayley has got the experienced and successful shoes of Stafanie Taylor to fill in. It is a squad of 15 that Barbados has brought forward that’ll represent Cricket West Indies (CWI). The squad is a very inexperienced one with many having not yet played internationally for West Indies.
BARBADOS SQUAD FOR THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES :
Aaliyah Alleyne, Shanika Bruce, Shai Carrington, Shaunte Carrington, Shamilia Connell, Deandra Dottin, Keila Elliott, Trishan Holder, Kycia Knight, Kyshona Knight, Hayley Matthews (C), Alisa Scantlebury, Shakera Selman, Tiffany Thorpe, Aaliyah Williams.
Barbados is placed in group A where they play Pakistan on 29th July, Australia on 31st July and India on 3rd August. The road ahead for the medal matches isn’t an easy one, especially, for Barbados having found themselves in group A where there’s Australia and India with Pakistan who don’t fail to spring a surprise. Under a new leadership group, this being Hayley Matthews’s first assignment eyes will be on how the young all-rounder leads her inexperienced side at the global stage.
