Winifred Duraisingam Leads Malaysia Women to Win Over Kuwait in Low-Scoring Thriller

Malaysia Women began their campaign in the ACC Women’s Premier Cup 2026 with a hard-fought nine-run victory over Kuwait Women in Kuala Lumpur, successfully defending a modest total in a contest dominated by disciplined bowling and crucial middle-order contributions. While the final margin was narrow, Malaysia held their nerve during key phases of the game, producing timely breakthroughs to deny Kuwait a successful chase in a low-scoring encounter.

After being put in to bat, Malaysia Women endured a difficult start as Kuwait’s bowlers applied pressure from the outset. Ainna Hamizah Hashim struggled to find momentum and was dismissed for 4, leaving Malaysia at 8/1 in the fourth over. The early breakthrough was provided by Candice Dias, who maintained excellent control with the new ball. Winifred Duraisingam and captain Mas Elysa attempted to rebuild the innings and added 25 runs for the second wicket, taking the score to 33 before another cluster of wickets halted Malaysia’s progress. Mas Elysa contributed 11 from 20 deliveries before becoming Mariamma Hyder’s first victim, while Mahirah Izzati Ismail was dismissed for a first-ball duck just one delivery later, leaving Malaysia suddenly wobbling at 33/3 after 8.4 overs.

With the innings in danger of unraveling, Winifred Duraisingam and Dhanusri Muhunan stitched together the most important partnership of the innings. The pair added 24 valuable runs for the fourth wicket, helping Malaysia recover from the early setbacks. Winifred showed patience throughout her 33-ball stay, scoring 24 runs with a boundary before being trapped lbw by Amna Tariq at 57/4 in the 13th over. Her innings proved vital in anchoring the batting effort on a surface where stroke-making was difficult.

Dhanusri Muhunan then assumed responsibility and guided the lower order through the latter stages of the innings. She played a measured knock of 28 from 28 deliveries, striking two boundaries and rotating the strike effectively. Nur Arianna Natsya contributed 4 before being run out, while Dhanusri and Irdina Beh Nabil added 21 runs for the sixth wicket to push Malaysia beyond 75. After Irdina departed for 3, Dhanusri’s dismissal at 87/7 in the 19th over gave Kuwait renewed hope of restricting Malaysia to an even lower score. However, Wan Julia remained unbeaten on 11 from just eight deliveries, while Nur Qalysha added an unbeaten 4. Their unbroken 15-run stand for the eighth wicket, combined with 13 extras, lifted Malaysia to 102/7 from their allotted 20 overs.

Kuwait’s bowling attack was largely responsible for keeping the scoring rate under control throughout the innings. Candice Dias emerged as the standout performer with figures of 2/10 from four excellent overs, including a maiden and an economy rate of just 2.50. Amna Tariq also impressed with 2/16 from four overs, claiming the crucial wickets of Winifred Duraisingam and Irdina Beh Nabil. Mariamma Hyder struck twice in her two-over spell, removing Mas Elysa and Mahirah Izzati Ismail to finish with 2/15. Tshering Yangchen bowled economically for 0/22, Priyada Murali conceded 19 runs from three overs, while Maryam Omar and Zeefa Jilani remained wicketless despite contributing useful overs in the middle stages.

Chasing 103 for victory, Kuwait Women suffered an immediate setback when Priyada Murali was dismissed without scoring at 0/1 in the very first over. Nur Dania Syuhada provided the breakthrough, setting the tone for Malaysia’s disciplined bowling display. Siobhan Gomez and Zeefa Jilani then mounted Kuwait’s best partnership of the match, adding 51 runs for the second wicket and reviving the chase. Gomez battled for 22 from 24 deliveries, while Zeefa anchored the innings brilliantly with 34 from 45 balls, including four boundaries. Their partnership carried Kuwait to 51 before Gomez was stumped off Nur Dania Syuhada, handing Malaysia a much-needed breakthrough.

Zeefa continued to hold the innings together and shared another productive stand worth nine runs with Balasubramani Shanti. However, once Zeefa was dismissed by Winifred Duraisingam at 60/3 in the 13th over, the momentum shifted decisively. Kuwait struggled to maintain the required scoring rate as wickets fell at regular intervals. Balasubramani Shanti contributed 9, while Maryam Omar added 11 from 16 balls in a 19-run partnership that briefly kept Kuwait in contention. Mariamma Hyder managed only 1 before falling to Mahirah Izzati Ismail, while captain Amna Tariq remained unbeaten on 9 from 15 deliveries. Suchitha Lita D Sa scored just 1 before being run out, and Kuwait eventually closed on 93/7 from their 20 overs, finishing nine runs short of the target.

Malaysia’s bowling effort was built on discipline rather than domination. Nur Dania Syuhada delivered a match-defining spell of 2/15 from four overs, removing both Priyada Murali and Siobhan Gomez. Ainna Hamizah Hashim produced an economical return of 1/15 from four overs and claimed the wicket of Maryam Omar. Winifred Duraisingam justified her Player of the Match award with a valuable all-round contribution, scoring 24 runs before taking 1/23 with the ball, dismissing the dangerous Zeefa Jilani. Mahirah Izzati Ismail chipped in with 1/18, while Aisya Eleesa bowled four tidy overs for 22 runs without a wicket. Sharp fielding also played a significant role, with two run-outs proving crucial in the closing stages of the chase.

This ACC Women’s Premier Cup match showcased the importance of partnerships and composure under pressure. Winifred Duraisingam’s all-round performance, Dhanusri Muhunan’s crucial middle-order contribution, and Malaysia’s collective bowling effort ultimately proved decisive. Despite Zeefa Jilani’s determined resistance and Kuwait’s strong 51-run second-wicket partnership, Malaysia Women held their nerve to secure a valuable nine-run victory and begin their tournament on a winning note.
