Sydney Sixers Win T20 Spring Challenge Final Beating Perth Scorchers by 15 Runs

The Sydney Sixers Women claimed the T20 Spring Challenge silverware with a gritty 15-run victory over the Perth Scorchers Women at Cricket Central in Sydney. Batting first after winning the toss, the Sixers posted a competitive total of 149/8 in their allotted 20 overs, anchored by skipper Erin Burns’ crucial 41 off 36 balls. In response, the Scorchers mounted a steady fight, but a disciplined, tight bowling attack from the Sixers tied them down. Perth kept losing wickets at regular intervals, ultimately falling short at 134/7 despite useful contributions throughout their middle order.

The Sixers hit the ground running with aggressive early intent, cruising to 50 runs inside 5.2 overs. Top-order contributions from Lauren Kua (24 off 20) and Claire Moore (23 off 20) laid a solid platform before captain Erin Burns took firm charge of the innings. Burns struck four boundaries during her top-scoring effort of 41, building a vital 50-run partnership off just 39 balls alongside young talent Caoimhe Bray, who hit 24 off 20 deliveries. Their quick scoring ensured the Sixers pushed past the 100-run milestone by the 14th over and set up a defendable target.

Just as the Sixers looked poised to launch a late onslaught, spinner Lilly Mills delivered a stellar spell to keep Perth right in the contest. Mills was the standout performer with the ball, tearing through Sydney’s middle and lower order to finish with outstanding figures of 3 for 19 in her 4 overs, conceding under 5 runs an over. Her quick double-strike in the 19th over—removing both Courtney Sippel and the dangerous Erin Burns—halted Sydney’s momentum. Alongside three sharp run-outs executed by Perth’s fielders, the Scorchers managed to restrict the Sixers to 149/8.

Chasing 150 for victory, Perth started their innings with plenty of intent. Openers Katie Mack (23 off 16) and Ines McKeon (17 off 10) found the boundary eight times between them in the opening overs, taking the team past 40 inside the powerplay. However, the breakthrough came when veteran finals campaigner Sarah Coyte removed Mack. Frankie Nicklin then chimed in to dismiss McKeon, immediately bringing the required run rate under control. Coyte’s opening spell proved masterful, keeping things exceptionally tight with figures of 1 for 18 across her 4 overs.

Perth’s chase lost crucial steam in the middle overs against Sydney’s disciplined slow bowlers. Mikayla Hinkley top-scored for the Scorchers with a hard-fought 31 off 27 balls (3 fours, 1 six), and skipper Chloe Piparo chipped in with 17. However, Juliette Morton broken open the game by removing both Hinkley and Alyssa Dermody. With the pressure mounting, young spinner Frankie Nicklin produced a decisive late spell, taking 3 for 33—including two wickets in the final over—to snuff out any hopes of a Perth comeback. Taneale Peschel tried her best with an unbeaten 20 off 22, but the Scorchers finished 15 runs adrift at 134/7

This maiden T20 Spring Challenge title is a massive statement for the Sydney Sixers as they head into the main WBBL campaign with plenty of wind in their sails. Player of the Final Erin Burns showed exactly why experience matters on the big stage, delivering with the bat when her side needed a steadying hand. For Perth, while falling just short in a summit clash always stings, their spirited bowling response and aggressive top-order opening show they have all the ingredients to compete with the best. Ultimately, Sydney’s ability to win the crucial pressure moments in the field and squeeze the middle overs made all the difference on a memorable final day.
