The Women’s Asia Cup 2026 will be held in Dubai from August 28 to September 13, 2026, bringing together the strongest women’s teams from across Asia. India will once again enter the tournament as one of the favourites and will be aiming to win another Asia Cup title. Under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, the team has gone through some memorable victories as well as a few disappointing defeats this year. Every series has helped the players learn something new and prepare for bigger challenges. A Confident Start Against Australia Set the Tone
India began their T20I season with a challenging three-match series against Australia in February. Winning a series in Australian conditions is never easy, but Harmanpreet Kaur’s side showed great confidence from the very first game. India won the opening T20I at the Sydney Cricket Ground by 21 runs (DLS method) and immediately put the hosts under pressure. Australia bounced back with a 19-run victory in Canberra to level the series. India, however, produced another excellent performance in Adelaide, winning the third match by 17 runs to seal an impressive 2-1 series victory and begin the year on a high.
South Africa Exposed Areas That Needed Improvement
India’s next assignment came in April, when they travelled to South Africa for a five-match T20I series. The home side dominated the opening three matches, winning by 6 wickets, 8 wickets and 9 wickets to take complete control of the series. India showed good fighting spirit in the fourth match and registered an encouraging 14-run victory, proving they could still compete against one of the world’s strongest teams. South Africa, however, finished the series strongly with a 23-run win in the final game to complete a 4-1 series victory. Although the results were disappointing, the tour became an important learning experience for India before the major tournaments.
England Series Offered Good Preparation Before the World Cup
India then travelled to England for a three-match T20I series during May and June, using the tour as preparation for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side made a bright start by defeating England by 38 runs in the opening match at Chelmsford. England responded strongly and won the second T20I by 26 runs in Bristol before securing the series with a six-wicket victory in Taunton. Although India lost the series 2-1, every match was highly competitive and gave the team valuable experience against another top-quality opponent. The series also allowed the coaching staff to test different combinations before the World Cup.
World Cup Brought Big Wins but Ended in Disappointment
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England and Wales became India’s biggest challenge before the Asia Cup. India began the tournament with an impressive 64-run victory over Pakistan, followed by another dominant 95-run win against the Netherlands. They also defeated Bangladesh by five wickets, showing calmness while chasing under pressure. However, defeats against South Africa and Australia meant India missed out on a place in the semi-finals. The campaign ended earlier than the team had hoped, but it also gave several players valuable experience of performing on the biggest stage. Those lessons could become extremely important during the Asia Cup.
A Balanced Squad Gives India Plenty of Confidence
India head into the Asia Cup with a squad that has a good mix of experienced players and exciting young talent. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur continues to lead from the front, while Smriti Mandhana remains India’s most dependable batter at the top of the order. Shafali Verma can change the game with her attacking starts, and Deepti Sharma provides balance with both bat and ball. Wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh strengthens the middle order with her aggressive batting, while bowlers Renuka Thakur, Radha Yadav, Sree Charani, Arundhati Reddy, Prema Rawat, Kranti Gaud and Nandni Sharma give India a strong and varied bowling attack capable of performing in different conditions.
Can India Reclaim the Asia Cup Trophy?
India have played 16 T20Is so far in 2026, winning 7 matches and losing 9. While the overall record may not look ideal, it is important to remember that most of those matches came against Australia, South Africa and England, three of the strongest teams in women’s cricket. Those tough contests have helped India prepare for another major tournament and shown the areas that still need improvement. Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will all be serious challengers in Dubai, but India have enough experience, quality and depth to compete for the title. If Harmanpreet Kaur’s side can produce consistent performances and use the lessons learnt throughout the year, they will have every chance of reclaiming the Women’s Asia Cup 2026.
