A thrilling contest in the Women’s T20 Blast 2026 competition saw Essex Women edge past Yorkshire Women by just three runs in a nail-biting finish. The match swung back and forth throughout the 40 overs, with both teams producing valuable partnerships, impactful bowling spells, and crucial moments under pressure. In the end, Essex held their nerve to defend 146/7 and restrict Yorkshire to 143 in 19.4 overs, sealing a memorable victory.

After being invited to bat, Essex began steadily through captain Grace Scrivens and Alice Macleod. The pair added 60 runs for the opening wicket, laying a solid platform without taking unnecessary risks. Macleod played fluently for her 22 from 20 deliveries, striking a boundary before falling to Holly Garton in the eighth over. Essex then suffered a brief wobble when Cordelia Griffith was trapped lbw by Jess Jonassen for a single, leaving the score at 61/2. However, Scrivens continued to anchor the innings superbly. Alongside Jodi Grewcock, she stitched together a crucial 27-run stand for the third wicket. Grewcock contributed 26 from 27 balls before being dismissed, but Scrivens remained the dominant force.

The Essex skipper reached a brilliant 53 from 40 balls, striking seven boundaries and scoring at a strike rate of 132.50. Her innings was the backbone of the Essex total and ensured momentum remained with the batting side. After Scrivens departed at 88/3 in the 12.4th over, Yorkshire fought back through disciplined bowling. Joanne Gardner managed only one run, while Florence Miller was run out for two. Yet Essex found late contributions from Sophia Smale and the lower order. Smale’s brisk 21 off 18 balls, including three boundaries, helped add valuable runs during the death overs. Amara Carr remained unbeaten on 4, while Eva Gray struck an unbeaten 6 from just three balls as Essex closed on 146/7 from their 20 overs. The innings also benefited from 11 extras.

Yorkshire’s bowlers shared the workload effectively. Jonassen was the standout performer with 2 wickets for 23 runs from her four overs, removing Griffith and Smale at key moments. Maddie Ward delivered an economical spell of 1/24 from four overs, while Ines Blackwell claimed 1/25. Garton also struck once, conceding 27 runs from her three overs. Ria Fackrell chipped in with 1/28, while Beth Langston’s two overs cost only 13 runs and helped slow Essex’s scoring rate in the middle phase.

Chasing 147, Yorkshire’s reply never quite gained complete control despite several promising partnerships. Openers Lauren Winfield-Hill and Erin Thomas added 25 runs before Thomas fell for a quick 17 from 10 balls. Winfield-Hill continued positively and shared another 23-run stand with Jonassen as Yorkshire moved to 48/2. However, Essex captain Scrivens made a crucial breakthrough by dismissing Jonassen for 10. The Yorkshire innings then revolved around Sterre Kalis and Ami Campbell. Kalis struck an entertaining 23 from 16 deliveries, including four boundaries, while Campbell produced a composed 26 from 22 balls with three fours and a six.

The pair helped Yorkshire recover before Kalis became the fourth wicket to fall at 88. Campbell then combined with Maddie Ward in a valuable 17-run partnership. Ward battled for 19 from 24 balls, but Essex repeatedly found wickets just as Yorkshire threatened to accelerate. At 105/5, the match was finely balanced. Campbell’s dismissal at 133/6 in the 18.1st over shifted momentum again, and Yorkshire suddenly found themselves needing a composed finish from the lower order.

Beth Langston scored 5, Ria Fackrell added 6 from four balls, and Olivia Thomas chipped in with 4, keeping Yorkshire in contention right until the final over. However, Essex’s bowlers held their nerve brilliantly. Eva Gray delivered the decisive spell, finishing with outstanding figures of 3/25 from four overs. She removed Ami Campbell, Beth Langston, and Olivia Thomas at critical stages. Scrivens complemented her captaincy performance with the ball, taking 2/27, including the wickets of Winfield-Hill and Jonassen. Sophia Smale also impressed with 2/20 from her four overs, while Kate Coppack and Esmae MacGregor maintained pressure despite going wicketless.

Yorkshire ultimately finished on 143 all out in 19.4 overs, falling agonisingly short by just three runs. The narrow victory was built on Grace Scrivens’ match-defining half-century and her all-round contribution, while Eva Gray’s late strikes ensured Essex defended their total successfully. For Yorkshire, contributions from Campbell, Kalis, Winfield-Hill, Ward, and Thomas kept the chase alive, but Essex’s ability to claim wickets at regular intervals proved the difference in a gripping Women’s T20 encounter.
