Tanzania Women finished their campaign in the Women’s T20 Quadrangular Series in Namibia on a winning note as a composed run chase, led by an outstanding knock from Saum Mtae, helped them defeat Hong Kong Women by seven wickets with 19 balls to spare at the Namibia Cricket Ground in the 3rd place playoff. After opting to field first, Tanzania’s bowlers produced a disciplined performance to restrict Hong Kong Women to a manageable total despite a determined unbeaten half-century from skipper Natasha Miles. Chasing 117, Tanzania lost a couple of wickets but never allowed the required rate to climb, thanks to Mtae’s aggressive strokeplay and a crucial unbeaten partnership that guided the side home comfortably.
Hong Kong Women’s innings began on a disappointing note when opener Mariko Hill failed to get off the mark. She was trapped by Agnes Qwele in the very first over, leaving the score at 1/1 after just five deliveries. The early breakthrough handed Tanzania immediate control, but skipper Natasha Miles ensured there was no further collapse. She found support from Yasmin Daswani, and together the pair rebuilt the innings with a steady 37-run second-wicket partnership. Daswani looked positive during her stay, striking four boundaries in her 24 off 28 balls, but just as the partnership was beginning to gather momentum, she was dismissed by Perice Kamunya, caught by Kamunya herself, with Hong Kong slipping to 38/2 in 8.4 overs.
Miles continued to anchor the innings and stitched together another useful stand, this time with Maryam Bibi. Their 62-run third-wicket partnership gave Hong Kong the platform they desperately needed after the early setback. Bibi contributed a patient 24 from 27 deliveries, rotating the strike effectively while allowing Miles to settle in. However, with the innings entering its closing phase, Saum Borakambi broke the stand by removing Bibi at 100/3 in the 17.5th over. The breakthrough prevented Hong Kong from launching a sustained late assault. Soon after, Karly Chan managed only 4 off 5 balls before becoming Maria Massawe’s only wicket, making it 105/4 in 18.6 overs. Tanzania’s bowling effort was built around discipline rather than outright domination. Agnes Qwele set the tone by dismissing Mariko Hill early and finishing with standout figures of 2/29 from her four overs. Perice Kamunya delivered perhaps the most impressive spell, conceding only 16 runs in four overs while taking the important wicket of Yasmin Daswani, maintaining an economy of just 4.00. Maria Massawe chipped in with the wicket of Karly Chan despite conceding 25 runs, while Saum Borakambi also picked up a wicket, giving away only 12 runs in her two overs. Sheila Kizito remained tidy with 0/15 from four overs, and Sophia Jerome completed the bowling effort with 0/18 from two overs, ensuring Hong Kong never gained complete control during the death overs.
Needing 117 for victory, Tanzania’s reply began with confidence. Although captain Neema Pius departed early for 15 off 21 balls, bowled by Marina Lamplough, after adding 61 runs for the opening wicket with Saum Mtae, the chase remained firmly on course. Mtae dominated the partnership, taking the attack to the Hong Kong bowlers with clean hitting all around the ground. She smashed 59 runs from just 36 deliveries, striking 10 fours and one six at an outstanding strike rate of 163.88, and deservedly walked away with the Player of the Match award. Her innings ensured Tanzania always stayed ahead of the asking rate.
After Neema’s dismissal, Mtae combined with Perice Kamunya for another valuable stand worth 29 runs for the second wicket. Kamunya played the perfect supporting role, remaining calm while Mtae continued finding boundaries. The momentum briefly shifted when Mtae was caught by Marina Lamplough off Joyleen Kaur at 90/2 in the 11.3rd over, giving Hong Kong a glimmer of hope. However, that hope was short-lived as Kamunya found another reliable partner in Aisha Mohamed. Kamunya remained unbeaten on a composed 31 from 30 balls, while Aisha added an unbeaten 2 off 2 deliveries. Together, they stitched an unbroken 27-run fourth-wicket partnership, guiding Tanzania to 117/3 in just 16.5 overs, sealing victory with more than three overs remaining.
Hong Kong’s bowlers struggled to consistently apply pressure despite picking up three wickets. Joyleen Kaur was the standout performer, claiming 2/17 from her three overs, including the prized wicket of Saum Mtae. Marina Lamplough removed Neema Pius but conceded 27 runs in three overs. Iqra Sahar bowled economically, returning figures of 0/19 from four overs, while Karly Chan remained wicketless despite bowling 3.5 overs for 27 runs. Ruchitha Venkatesh and Alison Siu were unable to make breakthroughs, conceding 15 and 12 runs respectively. Tanzania’s confident batting display ultimately proved too strong as they completed the chase with authority.
