According to Vernon Springer, Public Relations & Operations Manager of the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons, the franchise is looking to field a team in the WCPL. The Kris Persaud-owned Antigua and Barbuda Falcons were announced earlier this year as the latest addition to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), replacing the Jamaica Tallawahs for the upcoming edition of the T20 tournament, which will commence on August 30.

Vernon Springer reflects on the strategic vision for expanding cricket in Antigua & Barbuda, expressing a desire to establish a women’s team under the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons and to host the Women’s Caribbean Premier League in 2025. He insists that growth must be holistic, encompassing both men’s and women’s cricket.

“We are also making a pitch, as the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, to have our own women’s team next year, in 2025, and to host the Women’s Premier League right here in Antigua and Barbuda. So, it’s not just about the men but about ensuring that others benefit as well,” Springer said.

The inaugural edition of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League took place in 2022, featuring only three teams: the Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors, and Trinbago Knight Riders. The introduction of a Falcons women’s team would not only increase competition but also broaden the tournament’s appeal. Additionally, having the Falcons based in Antigua & Barbuda would create opportunities for local and regional players to gain exposure.

Vernon Springer further added, “The Leeward Islands Hurricanes will be in Antigua and Barbuda, and, in fact, they will start training here to prepare for the Super50. This presents another opportunity for young players in Antigua and Barbuda and around the region. We now have the Leeward Islands Hurricanes franchise, the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, and Cricket West Indies headquarters based here.”

The third edition of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League will take place from August 21-29, with all matches being played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in San Fernando, Trinidad. The defending champions, Barbados Royals, will face the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the opening match of the edition.
