Sophie Devine extends tenure with Perth Scorchers for 2 more seasons

In a major boost for the Perth Scorchers, New Zealand all-rounder Sophie Devine has committed to the club for the next two seasons. Devine’s extension comes ahead of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) overseas player draft and ensures she will remain a key player for the Scorchers’ squad through WBBL 10.

Devine, who joined the Scorchers for WBBL 06, will now continue her stint with the team under the league’s new pre-signing rule for international players. This makes her the first player—men’s or women’s—to be signed under this mechanism by the Scorchers.

The 34-year-old has been a dominant force in the WBBL throughout her career, having played 121 matches. She has accumulated 3,747 runs with a highest score of 106 not out and has claimed 98 wickets, with her best bowling figures being 5/41. Last season, Devine was particularly impressive, amassing 489 runs and taking 14 wickets. Her outstanding performance earned her a spot in the WBBL Team of the Tournament for the third time. Devine’s all-round abilities have seen her climb to third on the all-time run-scoring list and come within striking distance of reaching 100 wickets.

Reflecting on her decision to stay with the Scorchers, Devine expressed her excitement and loyalty. “I’m absolutely stoked to be returning to the Scorchers,” she said. “I have built such a special connection with the players and staff over the past four seasons, and I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.”

Devine has delivered numerous memorable performances for the Scorchers, including a remarkable 106 not out at Allan Border Field last season. Her leadership was instrumental in their WBBL 07 championship victory, a highlight she cherishes deeply. Looking ahead, Devine is eager to help the Scorchers bounce back from their early exit in the previous season.

“Winning the WBBL|07 title in front of our fans at Optus Stadium will always be a special memory for me,” she said. “Last season didn’t end as we had hoped, but I know we have the talent and confidence within the playing group to make WBBL|10 a memorable one.”

Devine’s extension is part of a busy off-season for the Scorchers, who have also secured powerful batter Mikayla Hinkley from the Brisbane Heat and extended key bowler Alana King’s contract for three more seasons. Despite these additions, the Scorchers still have eight spots open on their roster and have yet to re-sign star player Beth Mooney.

The team will have opportunities to enhance their squad further at the upcoming player draft on September 1, where they hold picks 8, 16, 17, and 32. The Scorchers’ 2024-25 season will kick off with a home game against the Melbourne Stars at the WACA Ground on October 27.

With Sophie Devine back on board, the Scorchers are well-positioned to mount a strong challenge for the title in the upcoming season.
